In their natural form, dopplegangers do not have a mouth. I was wondering how they communicate in that form. The 3.5 Mounster Manual makes no mention of how this occurs. Thank you for your time.

I would say that a mouth appears for the purpose of speaking whenever the creature will it. These are dopplegangers, after all, so changing their form even for the simplest acts shouldn't be very strange for them.

Remember, dopplegangers can use Detect Thoughts at will. Little need for talking when you can read each other's minds.

Yeah, I agree with Saphite. Detect Thoughts makes verbal communication a bit unnecessary.

I was more interested in how a dopleganger would talk to a nondoppleganger when in its natural form.

In that case, they'd most likely assume the form of something that can talk, attempt sign language, or employ an advanced form of pantomime:)

What the bloody hell?!

I like to think that Dopplegangers don't communicate in their natural form. They're all about infiltration, why would they ever reveal that they are a doppleganger?

....then flipping me the bird.

:D

Actually, I just took another look at the picture of one in the 3.0 MM.

There looks like there may be a thin slit of a mouth that looks like the top half of a pyramid, like this:

You don't really need a mouth to speak. That is to say, there are more ways of creating audible vibrations/sound waves than forcing air across membranes, which is the way we humans speak. Perhaps dopplegangers have some sort of vibrating chamber that creates sound. Or perhaps their language is non-verbal. They could communicate in gestures, as has been mentioned before, or perhaps they carry large pieces of paper and communicate using pictionary.

If they do speak, perhaps, given the fact that they are the epitome of shapechangers, they probably create a mouth as needed.

I really like this idea. Dopplegangers: walking stereo speakers that can read your mind and take your form!

Maybe dopplegangers use their rear-ends to talk. Being the masters of deception, this has lead to the slang expression "he is talking out his ass!"

Who says they have no mouth? Common is listed as an automatic language for doppelganger characters.

They have mouths you just can't see it if it is closed. They just have no lips. If they had no mouth how could they eat?
