| Docle07-27-04, 06:11 PM | Recently I've made a doppleganger character and a couple of questions have no answers in our group. 1. Do I keep my clothes when I change and do I create clothes when I change into the new form? 2. What can I change into....med and small....but what....a lich? he's medium....a mindflayer....he's medium.....need an explanation. 3. My weapons when I change do they change into the weapons of the from I take with just the look and not actually the weapon....i.e. and my longsword looks like a scimitar but is my longsword still???? 4. Can I take to form of a med. size fiend or plane touched and get his wings...??? Because if I take a form it says I get their forms of transportation and their special attacks...but can I turn into it? |

It's no longer explicitely stated, but in the past it was said doppelgangers can assume the form of clothing or equipment, but actual equipment and clothing does not change. 2. They can change into creatures with the humanoid type. Neither liches or mind flayers are humanoids (they have humanoid form, but they are undead and abberation, respectively). At any rate, they only assume forms, not abilities. 3. Actual weapons do not change. 4. Nowhere in the doppelganger entry does it say anything about gaining their transportation or special abilities. They only change shape. At any rate, fiends and planetouched are outsiders, not humanoids. "Humanoid" is a creature type in this case, not a description. |

| Egres07-31-04, 10:20 AM | From the SRD: Change Shape (Su): A creature with this special quality has the ability to assume the appearance of a specific creature or type of creature (usually a humanoid), but retains most of its own physical qualities. A creature cannot change shape to a form more than one size category smaller or larger than its original form. Changing shape results in the following changes to the creature: —The creature retains the type and subtype of its original form. It gains the size of its new form. —The creature loses the natural weapons, movement modes, and extraordinary special attacks of its original form. —The creature gains the natural weapons, movement modes, and extraordinary special attacks of its new form. —The creature retains all other special attacks and qualities of its original form, except for breath weapons and gaze attacks. —The creature retains the ability scores of its original form. —The creature retains its hit points and saves. —The creature retains any spellcasting ability it had in its original form, although it must be able to speak intelligibly to cast spells with verbal components and it must have humanlike hands to cast spells with somatic components. —The creature is effectively camouflaged as a creature of its new form, and gains a +10 bonus on Disguise checks if it uses this ability to create a disguise. |
