Hiya
I was looking through the Fiend Folio, and noticed a few DR's are listed as needing a weapon enhancement. I also looked through my Monsters of Faerun and the errata, and noticed that stuff like the dragons were errated to DR 10/magic etc. I was just curious is the Fiend Folio needs updating, or if the DR in there is right. An example of this is the Blackstone Gigant's DR 30/+5 (as the title :))

It needs updating. That DR becomes 30/magic.

The update booklet can be found here (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/DnD35_Fiend_Folio.zip).

It's dr becomes 15/adamantine now.:)

Dr 30/magic would be a huge step backwards from DR 30/+5.
Basically most DR was nerfed into uselessness by 3.5

Magical DR was nerfed into uselessness. On the other hand, material or alignment based DR was boosted incredibly.

Just looking down the list, and some creatures, such as the Kelpie or Half-Fey templated creature has DR/iron. How do you define weapons with iron as a property? Are we simply dealing with a metal weapon, like a Sword, and so a weapon like a Quarterstaff wouldn't affect it, or is it slightly different?

They don't have DR/iron, they have DR/cold iron. Cold iron is a specific property mentioned in the Dungeon Master's Guide.

A material, actually. A property would be shocking or something similar.

It's like adamantine or silver.

No, DR overall was utterly useless in 3.0. Just one simple 3rd level spell that EVERYONE and their mother had access to, and you can beat out any DR in the game. It was completely idiotic. DR was either totally meaningless, or totally overpowering in the very rare occasions you couldn't beat it.

3.5's DR X/magic is usually pretty useless at the levels that you face it, just like in 3.0. However, 3.5's material, alignment, or weapon type DR is a vast boon, and combined with magic DR makes for some interesting fights and requires actual use of tactical thinking in many cases. 3.5 DR is a good system; one that could use a little improvement at points, but a good system overall.

Which is funny really. Even with rediculously high magic DRs back in 3.0, it was still better than 2E. Back in 2E, if you didn't have a powerful enough weapon, you simply wouldn't hit, regardless of how much damage you dealt. I guess they figured this was a bad mechanic in general.

Imo they should have kept the /+X DR instead of a flat /magic DR.

Except most of the creatures that had a high /+X DR have now received DR that can only be overcome by certain materials or alignments. Which actually is better for those creatures in most cases.
