DR 5/silver v. masterwork weapon? Monk's ki strike? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Are my interpretations correct?

1. DR 5/silver. This means that ONLY a silver weapon beats the damage reduction of 5. A +1, MW, aligned or other kind of magic weapon does not.

2. Ki Strike does NOT beat DR 5/silver. Ki Strike for a monk (at 5th level) is listed as bypassing MAGIC. Silver is not magic. Hence, Ki Strike does not apply. Ki Strike applies only, in the interest of bypassing damage reduction, on magic (at 5th level), lawful (at 10th level), and adamantine (at 15th level). It will never apply against piercing or slashing DR, any other aligned DR, cold iron DR, etc. [Note that this does seem to limit a monk's effectiveness of her ki strike ... but is perhaps a bit more balancing.]

So, am I right or wrong in my interpretations?

In 3.0, it was DR/Silver (or better). Now, in 3.5, its DR/Silver (Period).
In both 3.0 and 3.5, a masterwork weapon is neither magical nor silver, so cannot bypass DR/Silver.

See my edit. Should Ki Strike be read as specifically. The rules suggest it should.

a +5 vorpral adamantine blade does not bypass damage reduction 5/silver in 3.5 (with the other benifets it is still a nice thing to have in the situation) it is a specific weakness to just silver that bypasses the damage reduction you are asking about. Accept no substutes, you can still damage a creature with damage reduction but the damage must be greater than the the damage reduction, or be energy based(fire, sonic, electricity, cold or acid).

In 3.5 Ki strike does not bypass silver or cold iron based damage reduction. Reguardless of level, period. Damage reduction is covered in the DMG page #291.

are there any monk feats that add new Ki abilities? ... I don't recall seeing any in the SRD.

There's a prestige class - Thayan Gladiator I believe, that gives effectively Ki Strike (silver), Ki Strike (cold iron), and Ki Strike (magic), at various levels for natural weapons. Also, there's the Planar Monk variant in the Planar Handbook.

And an Eberron Warforged monk with Silver Tracery feat. . . though I don't see why it costs a feat to have silver attached to your body. . .

Get yourself a pair of gauntlets that adds the magic and silver flags to any weapon you wield.

The silver tracery does not attach silver to your body. It enables the warforged to grow silver tracery in their body.

Planar Handbook offers planar substitution levels. Monks can gain substitution levels that offer these variant ki strike abilities. At least cold iron, I know that much.
