Dracolyte's Wyrmling Dragon and the progression of time. [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-25-04, 03:07 AM I ran a search on this and didn't find anything conclusive...

At level 5 a dracolyte gets a wyrmling dragon based on aligment intrusted to his care. What happens when the wyrmling grows up in around 5 years? Does it stick around like a cohort? Does it fly off and a new dragon is entrusted to the Dracolyte?

Eather seems exceptable as the ability seems to be more one of flavor then power.

01-25-04, 12:43 PM Well in all honesty 5 years in game is a rather long time, i mean you'll likely be epic by then in which case a "very young" dragon is not going to make a whole lot of difference, even if it is a gold or red.

01-25-04, 12:49 PM Exactly. even if your charictors take exteneded breaks and are nowhere near epic it's still not at risk of realy imbalancing the game. However I was more interested in what people though of the flavor of what should happen since I know in some games 5 years might not realy be That long.

01-25-04, 12:50 PM Not all games progress very fast. In some sort of games 5 years can pass rather quickly.

I can think of two options:

1. The dragon leaves when growing older than wyrmling like a dragon familiar does.

2. The dragon would stay with the Dracolyte for as long as it would stay with his parents and would leave then.

The first option is more liklely to preserve balance, the second one fits better from the RP point of view.

Either way the Dracolyte should get a new dragon for raising and maybe a small gift for the good job with the last wyrmling.

01-25-04, 01:20 PM Well that would give you roughly 25 years with the dragon, assuming you get it right out of the egg. Which is an awful long time for a Human, probably long enough for the character to be retired, but for the other races, especially elves this is a very short period.

Perhaps if you want to keep both balance and RP you could play your role with the dragon as more like a draconic babysitter. You keep it for a little while but when it is old enough it goes to like with other dragons and you are entrusted with another wyrming. I with good dragons it could be a way of teaching the dragons to connect wiht humans, give them a personal reason to want to protect humanity. For evil dragons it could be a way of cementing alliances, ensuring that both human and dragon will have someone to call on for favors and assistance.

While it isn't disallowed the feat dragonfriend clearly means that you get along with good dragons.

Back to topic.
Concerning the balance it is imo the best ro exchange the dragon when it grows with a other wyrmling.
