| MrFahrenheit04-02-04, 12:35 AM | Hi all. Not sure if this has been brought up here before, but a question that has been plaguing my mind. At fifth level, the dracolyte is entrusted with a wyrmling that matches the dracolyte's alignment. If the wyrmling dies, the character cannot proceed any further in the prestige class (until receiving an atonement spell). But what if the character (and the wyrmling) travel to the Heroic Domain of Ysgard and the wyrmling dies. According to the rules of that plane, the wyrmling would re-awaken the next day. Would the death/halting level advancement rule still apply? Two arguments (one for, one against) the rule continuing. 1) The wyrmling isn't really dead as it still rises the next day. Therefore, the dracolyte shouldn't be punished... BUT 2) The dracolyte still failed by letting the wyrmling die in the first place, regardless of the fact that it rose the next day! (This argument could also be raised if the wyrmling was raised with "true resurrection" or indeed any of the other raise dead spells) Also, just a general question... Assuming the dracolyte has his/her companion die in a regular-rules-of-death plane, does that mean the dracolyte can't gain experience until atoned or can get 99.99999% of the way to dracolyte lev 6 but never reach it until atoned? Thanks in advance for any comments/advice/suggestions, etc... |
| MrFahrenheit04-02-04, 10:58 AM | Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? |
| Derren S.04-02-04, 02:47 PM | Imo death is death. That the wyrmling will live again the next day shoud only make the atonement easier. |
| gradea04-02-04, 02:54 PM | i dont think it should be a problem, here death ISNT even death, its a mild inconvinenace and it can gain all the EXP it wants, it can just never select to take another level of dracolite untill atonment |
| MrFahrenheit04-02-04, 03:05 PM | Okay. I think I agree more with Derren. Atonement should be easier but should still have to be attained to move up. |
| Kastas04-02-04, 03:28 PM | I disagree. To die and be reborn each day is the nature of Ysgard. Although it was not explicitely stated, I think that the wording of the class implies that the dragon must die permanently in order for the death to require an atonement. If the dragon returns to life the next day and continues adventuring, then he doesn't suffer any long-term harm, and neither should the dracolyte. However, other conditions may merit atonement, such as: -Leaving the slain dragon behind, either willingly or unwillingly -Forcing the dragon to remain in an inhospitable environment such as Ysgard for an unnecessarily long period of time, resulting in unnecessary deaths. I assume that your character is of good alignment and went there as part of a quest, which wouldn't count. |
| MrFahrenheit04-05-04, 02:21 PM | Hmm...unfortunately I don't have my Draconomicon on hand right now, but if you were right, then that would mean that a dracolyte whose wyrmling who dies on a "regular death" plane and then is brought back with True Resurrection or another raise dead spell wouldn't have to be atoned either. The reason I bring up the Draconomicon itself is cuz, like I said, I don't have it on me, so does it say something about the wyrmling being resurrected? |
| destinyknight04-08-04, 01:53 PM | I don't own the Draconomicon, but I would use the rules for the death of a familiar/animal companion to fill in the gaps. |
| MrFahrenheit04-08-04, 08:59 PM | Well actually it doesnt say anything about being resurrected, which is why I find myself agreeing more and more with Derren. The dracolyte failed his mission. If the DRACOLYTE were to have died in Ysgard, then the wyrmling would still be there for him the next day (assuming the wyrmling escaped the battle and didn't die as well). I think this is my final position on it. |
