Kothardarastrix 10-04-05, 04:37 AM	The felldrakes are a grouping of lesser dragons, and I don't think ambush drakes, it's similair to the way the similodon is also called 'The Saber-Tooth Tiger/Cat'. You also forgot Hellfire Wyrm's, Steel's, Mercuries, Gravewyrm's, Glacierdrak's, Temporal Drake's, and Mist's. FYI, other than the spiked felldrake in Draconomicon I know of the Horned, Spitting, and Crested felldrakes. Also I forgot about the Wyvern and the Pseudodragon.

The Vorpal Tribble 10-04-05, 11:59 AM	Ok, so what we got here is 80+ varities of a single type of creature thats normally far beyond in power than a normal human city combined... so my point to this thread is thus: Why do we keep making more of them? And better yet, why do people keep ASKING for them?! Dragons are cool, fine, but for pete's sake people what more do you want? The world should be groaning under the weight of sheer draco-mass. What possible ecosystem aren't they the lord of now? Yet I still see people trying to make dozens more, requesting more... elves are bad enough and they only have a dozen varieties or so. VT for the neutering of all things dragon!
Kothardarastrix 10-04-05, 08:29 PM	Dragons are the quintessential monster, every culture has a dragon in it somewhere. Besides, planes are infinite in size. Actually that's a pretty stupid question, no insult, why do we make any monster?

VT for the neutering of all things dragon!Well, VT, you'll be happy to know that ALL dragon's are purely mythical IMC I'm currently running. Lizardmen and their relatives think that they're descended from dragons in the ancient past, but they're wrong (they can still take the Dragon Disciple PrC becuase through metaphysical rituals they assume dragonhood, but that's the closet thing they'll come to having real dragons). Although I admit. There will be a sort of dragon later in the game. Blue dragons with the umbral template from LM slapped on them invading from the plane of Shadows. But only because I wanted a stupidly silly monster and blues are THE superior breed of dragons.

Meh, my brother procured the Draconomicon last year and reading through it just make my like of blues grow stronger. I really dig their society, their looks and their breath weapon. The only fault with them is that they prefer hot deserts. I guess its because blue dragons were just always cooler in the Dragonlance series (especially the one bonded with Kitara). Anyway, sort of like how dragons are overdone (I know, I know, its called Dungeons and DRAGONS), fire is an overdone element. Hence why reds (and golds) are overrated to me. Even when I'm playing a "standard" D&D game, I prefer to keep dragons as rare occurances, rather than a plague of flying skinks (yes, I'd be that guy who goes up and taunts a dragon to its face just to see it react) constantly terrorizing the land and demanding tribute. And when I do go through my "I gotta have dragons" phase, they tend to go about in humanoid form, subtly influencing events, be it for good or for bad. I like my dragons to be sly and intelligent, not bloated, meglomaniacal, windbags that barbeque a small nation for a lark.
Kothardarastrix 10-05-05, 01:27 AM	You forget blues have BBQifying breath too, and yes I agree on the fact that GOLDS and fire subtypes are over done, but the only other subtype I have is Cold... Which means I can choose the special-ed white dragon or the Silver, and I don't know about you but I hate the silvers wing design.

Orange, purple, yellow (missing chromatics from the soon-to-be-released Dragon Compendium Vol. 1) Lesser dragons... Portal drake (Underdark), stone drake (Races of Stone), spiretop dragon (Sharn) Dragons are cool, fine, but for pete's sake people what more do you want? The world should be groaning under the weight of sheer draco-mass. What possible ecosystem aren't they the lord of now? The rest of the planes, and aquatic environments (no dragons in Stormwrack).

Well you see, presumably not all of these dragons necessarily exist on any given world - just like not all monsters in every monster manual everywhere necessarily exist on any given world (and the sum total of that mass far exceeds that of dragons). But just like other monsters - perhaps moreso given the iconography - it is important to have the proper dragon for any given occasion.

Basically the higher the age category, the rarer the dragon has become. Lord of their domain? Seriously, humans will rules most areas.

What's the name of the game you play? ....... alright sorry, I couldn't resist making that comment. I do agree that there are too many dragons - too many to effectively use in my campaign. How many species of Butterflies are there? Or Lizards? Or Primates? Or Fish? Let's be thankful that the number of Elf-types hasn't reached Draconic proportions! Or has it?
