Previn 12-30-03, 11:25 AM	Ok, dragons cast as sorcerers, and use the listed caster level. Why then do they all have a caster levels that is just below the next level of spells? When they list a caster level of 3 for a young adult, they don't gain second level spells, and this delayed spell progression of a delayed spell progression just seems, well stupid. I just can't find a rational reason for it. Does anyone know if this was intentional?
sandskimmer 12-30-03, 03:02 PM	They have the same spell progression as a Sorcerer. Sorcerers do not gain 2nd level spells at 3rd level either. You are thinking of wizards, who have better spell progression. See the sorcerer entry in the PHB for verification...
primemover003 12-30-03, 05:24 PM	Also dragons aren't going to be powerful spellcasters without taking class levels. A dragon's forte is melee, pure and simple. Sure it has a nice compliment of spells at it's disposal, but it's wise to use them as buffs or to shape the battlefield rather than as artillery. Most PC's who fall within the appropriate challenge ratings will easily be able to save against a dragon's spells about 50% of the time.

I'm glade you didn't read what I asked, now I get to take the time to explain to you what you failed to grasp before spouting off. I know how they gain and cast spells, it was the first sentence of my post. I want to know why they bother to list them as a 3rd level sorcerer if they don't improve their spell level? Why list that they can still cast 1st level spells rather than list when they gain 2nd level spells? They should list the dragon spell levels as 1 then 4, then 6 etc, but they don't. Is it some colossal error? Has no-one noticed the illogical nature of this?

Yes, I agree that the spell progression for a dragon should be listed as even levels instead of odd levels. So: 1 4 6 etc. Instead of: 1 3 5 etc. Because sorcerers only gain new spells per every even spell level. So it's kinda pointless to list the odd level spell progression...
Boondoggle 12-30-03, 07:08 PM	Well, the 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc. increase is a pattern. I also think it's intentional that dragons of that age category normally don't have higher level spells. If it truly bothers you that much, just bump the caster level up by one & increase the CR by one.

Like they made it for wizard casting and then changed it after the fact.
