Dragon construct? [Archive] - Wizards Community

All right. I've looked around every quasi-related forum and book I can lay my hands on and I can't find an answer. Is there any way to build some kind of mechanical dragon under official WoTC rules? I have no problem making some up if I have to, but I'd like to keep this campaign as proper as possible.

Also, while I'm asking, I was wondering whether to house-rule in a certain spell combination. If you could Permanence a Mage Hand spell, could you make a wheel or gear that spun (with no other motive power) when activated? It would, of course, be restricted to five pounds of force. But you could probably rig up a clockwork mechanism to that and wind a crossbow with it. Just a curiosity, really.

Thanks in advance.

If I understand your request correctly, you want a construct that looks like a dragon, acts like a dragon, and fights like a dragon? Then look to the three golems in Draconomicon that are animated by spirit of a dragon (rather than the essense of an earth elemental as is the case for other golems). These are the dragonbone golem, drakestone golem, and ironwyrm golem.

I'm not sure if its directly possible, but you could use/adapt the Effigy template for a dragon.

on the secound you must ask the dm because if your inventing perpetual motion then i think he/she should know and on the first the dragon golems from Draconomicon are you best bet for the most efficient although it would be possible to make a golem that could act like a dragon although it is very likly it wouldn't.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'll definitely look for the golems in the Draconomicon. And I'll give the perpetual motion a bit more thought. It just seems like if you can enhance a sword to swing harder and more accurately, you could enhance a crossbow to wind itself.

i actualy have thought about that crossbow idea. from what i can figure prestidigitation made permanent would work if set right but there is also the spell shrink item that is stated as able to be made permanent that is set to shrink an object and unshrink the object on a command word so you can make a crossbow that could not only wind itself but fire it self on comand.

the 3.0 Arms and Equipment guide had a crossbow enchantment and a specific weapon description that sort of meets your needs. I can't recall which is which, but one is Self Loading and another stores I think 100 bolts extradimensionally or something to that effect...

Edit: also, for perpetual motion, check out the spell Animate Object, and the MM entry for animated objects.

There is currently a spell that functions like this in the Races of the Dragon. It is called Ghostly Reload and states that ghostly hands draw the string back into its catch by themselves (as a free action) for so and so forth long of time (not looking it up now, sorry). If you wanted to try and get that spell permanantly you might be more successful at convincing people (your DM specifically).

P.S. its a level one spell
