| shadow mage07-11-04, 06:53 PM | A while ago I decided to try and make a unique sort of dragon, a one of a kind you could say. He was an eeeeevil mofo that was a crossbreed between two allied dragons, half red dragon and half black dragon. Now that I've got a story, I just need to make the stats. Half Red Dragon, Half Black Dragon Using simple logic I'm going to ignore the Half Dragon template. I'm sorry, but I won't buy that a literal half-and-half has one fully usable breath weapon and another that's considerably weaker and usable only once per day (a single example, no need for further examples. That said, how should I go about making a crossbreed between two dragon types? I figure that if they're at different power levels (like black dragons and red dragons) I can simply find a median between the two species and make the stats up like that. Any ideas? |

| Mithral Icesilver07-12-04, 01:24 PM | Nightscreamer had a nice Half-Breed template somewheres, use that on two dragons of the appropriate age. Call it a Maroon Dragon. Here's a list of dragon hybrids I brainstormed (with help from my mom & dad) awhile back: Chromatic______________Metallic Black + Blue = Navy______Brass + Bronze = Antimony Black + Green = Gloom____Brass + Copper = Graphite Black + Red = Maroon_____Brass + Gold = Pyrite Black + White = Gray_____Brass + Silver = Chrome Blue + Green = Blue-green_Bronze + Copper = Nickel Blue + Red = Violet_______Bronze + Gold = Hematite Blue + White = Sky_______Bronze + Silver = Zinc Green + Red = Yellow_____Copper + Gold = Auruchum Green + White = Seaspray__Copper + Silver = Titanium Red + White = Pink_______Gold + Silver = Mithral Gem Amethyst + Crystal = Quartz Amethyst + Emerald = Tanzanite Amethyst + Sapphire = Lazurite Amethyst + Topaz = Opal Crystal + Emerald = Atacamite Crystal + Sapphire = Azurite Crystal + Topaz = Limonite Emerald + Sapphire = Turquoise Emerald + Topaz = Celestine Sapphire + Topaz = Jacinth |
| SirGog07-12-04, 06:59 PM | I'd start like this: HD: Take the average, rounded down, for a given age category. Spd: Average fly speed and land speed. Take at most one special speed (e.g. burrow) and reduce it by 25-50%. Size: Base on HD (there's a table somewhere...) Ability Scores: Average them, round physical stats up and mental stats down. Skills: Class skills should be all the basic dragon skills, plus any skill both parent dragons have, plus a selection of skills that fit your description of the dragon. These skills should not include any that neither parent has. Also, if either parent recieves bonus skills, the crossbreed should recieve 1/3 as many ranks in that skill as a bonus. Spell-like abilities: Come up with a unique list, I don't think extrapolating from the parents will work. Breath Weapon: Deals 2 types of damage, each slightly more 1/2 of the damage the parent dragon does as follows: d4 ==> d4-1 d6 ==> d3 d8 ==> d4 d10 ==> 2d4-2 d12 ==> d6* d20 ==> d10* (* - these aren't used by core rules dragons, included for completion) Immunities: If both parents are immune to an energy form, so is the child. If one is immune and the other is vulnerable, the crossbreed has no resistance or immunity to that energy. If one parent is immune and the other affected normally, the crossbreed dragon has energy resistance to that element equal to its hit dice. The crossbreed is only vulnerable to an energy type if both parents are. Subtypes: The crossbreed has any subtypes that both parents have, plus additional ones if the DM sees fit. Spellcasting: As the average of the parents. If exactly one parent has the ability to cast spells from lists other than the sorceror list, the crossbreed can learn spells from that list once it has learned any spells of any higher level (for example, if exactly one parent can cast cleric spells, the crossbreed can learn cure critical wounds at any time after it has learned any 5th level spell). If both parents can learn a given spell from a different list, the crossbreed can learn it too. Other Abilities: If either parent has alternate form, the crossbreed does too. Any other abilities (such as cloudwalking) should be replaced by "in theme" abilities for the new dragon, so a Gloom dragon might have the ability to see perfectly in all darkness (including magical). |
