Could this be done? And what/how would the breath weapon be handled? Thanks.

yes it can be done. If you have the Draconomicon they have a table for other 1/2-dragons that are not the core 10 but are the other true dragons(ones with age categories)just apply the apropriate breath and immunities in place of those listed with the dragon disiple.

Thank you. However, how would the breath weapon progression be handled? If all it does is one negative level total, then basically the shadow dragon Disciple has a full power breath weapon at level three. Oh yeah, I do own the Draconomicon. Thanks for any responses.

It's not a very elegant solution, but you could break down the penalties that the negative level bestows and give them to the DD one piece at a time. They are:

-1 on all skill checks and ability checks
-1 on attack rolls and saving throws
-5 hit points
-1 effective level
Loss of highest level spell

Group those last two together and you have four different effects. It's crude, but it's a way to scale the breath weapon's power.

The only other thing I can think of is applying a penalty to the save DC for the breath weapon that gets reduced as the DD gains levels. The base DC is 10+class level+Con modifier. You could apply, for example, an additional -6 to this to begin with, and reduce the penalty by 2 each time the breath weapon gets upgraded. (I'm not sure of whether those numbers are balanced or not, it was just an example.)

I would just apply the breath weapon as it is presented all at once however if I recall correctly most of the effects have a duration so I would just reduce the duration by 1/4 and as you advance levels just add the next 1/4 untill you reach 10th lvl.

The thing is, about 95% of the time, 1/4 duration is not going to have any more or less effect on the game than full duration. Most of the creatures that you use the breath weapon on are going to be dead within the next minute or so.
