How can a dragon without an innate Alternate Form ability disguise itself as a humanoid for an extended period of time (hours, days, weeks) without having to go hide and cast a spell every so often (in minutes, based on spells like polymorph and alter self)?

A tricky one...
How about it gets someone to make it a magic item that keeps it polymorphed. I'm sure a dragon has both the time, money and help to get this done ;)

An indefinite polymorph item? Wonder what the cost would be... the dragon does have a magical ally. :smirk:

Simple, dragons still use the 3.0 version of Polymorph, so they only have to cast it every day or so. :D

I'm not really a big fan of mixing and matching between 3.0 and 3.5 Editions... especially when it favors one side over another (PCs and NPCs). If I let that go, the players would want to use the same version of polymorph, then they'll start asking to use 3.0 versions of other spells.

Dragons cast as sorcerers, so the argument that the PCs should be able to cast the same exact spells doesn't really apply. If the dragon in question is unique (ie, you only need the one specific dragon to be able to polymorph into a humanoid form for extended periods of time), then just reason that this particular dragon spent decades perfecting this specific spell (ie, sorcerer 'research') and is the only creature that has ever done so...characters wouldn't have any reason to suspect that this dragon uses a different version of a tried-and-true spell (or at least, shouldn't be able to know this unless metagaming), and therefore they would have no idea that they just missed a golden opportunity for spell research (assuming that they could either 1) study the dragon casting the spell a sufficient number of times or 2) coerce the dragon into teaching them the spell). Heck, even if they somehow learned the spell, how unbalancing is it to know a spell that allows you to assume a humanoid form for hours per day? Not as though the PCs cannot accomplish much the same thing with a disguise kit...

Problem solved. :smirk: (when you are the DM, the story comes first; if this particular 'hook' serves the story better than an alternate method, then just bend the rules to your whim...anyone that whines about it is just being petty)

Anyway, just some rambling thoughts...

I'm really the potential whiner... And I'm not worried about a 3.0 spell unbalancing the game, but I don't want to start a trend of falling back on the old rules whenever it suits the story. I'd like to avoid it altogether.
