Quick, kind of dumb question: do dragons get any sort of enhancement bonus or the equivalent for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction? I ask mostly because it seems that dragons can't do anything at all (physically) to many other higher level monsters, such as the kind PC's are fond of summoning while fighting dragons. Admittedly, they still have their breath weapons and spells, but still.

You can cast Magic Fang on a dragon, I suppose, but they can't cast it on themselves...

Just wondering if I was missing something here somewhere.

In 3.0e a creatures DR and natural weapons count as having an enhancement bouns equal to the value needed to pierce their own DR.

Eg a Great Wyrm Silver Dragon can bypass x/+3 DR

Any creature that has Damage Reduction can pierce Damage reduction of equal or lesser value with its natural attacks.

Hence, if a dragon had DR 20/+3, it could pierce DR 30/+2, or DR 5/+1, or DR 15/+3, or whatever. So long as the denominator is greater than or equal to the target's denominator, it passes DR.

Essentially, you treat the natural attacks of a creature with DR as magical weapons with the same bonus as the DR's denominator when dealing with opposing DR.

So a dragon's claw attacks might very well rip right into a demon's flesh, given that both dragons and demons tend to have DR topping out around x/+3 (in the Monster Manual, anyway).

Aha, that makes sense. Thanks for the info.

Out of curiousity, though, where does it describe this in the rulebooks?

page 73-74 of the DMG... under the heading Damage Reduction.
