"...arcane spellcaster level 7th..." Anyone else see a problem there?

You gain a feat at 6th level, and then have to wait till 9th level to gain another feat. Meaning the earliest you can take it is 9th level. By then, you've got four dragons to choose from (ignoring alignment), so why would anyone choose a white dragon except for flavor?

perhaps you're not a "pure" caster, but rather a multiclassed character- let's say sorc 7/monk2 or something, which would allow you to get the feat because your ECL is 9, etc.

because.. d&d should be about flavor, story, role playing.. (disregarding you having said "besides for flavor")

Blah, I don't want to multi-class. . .

Yeah, I guess you're right. . . and now, after getting a white dragon in my minatures pack, I might actually go with it anyway. Of course, that's if I can't urge my DM to change it. (Plus they're cuter than the other wyrmlings that'll be avalible to me.)

honestly, white dragons kinda suck... they're the stupidest and smallest of the chromatic dragons... they're basically "animalistic predators".

wait and get a real dragon, that's what i say :smirk:

Kinda? I think it's a little more than just "kinda". I'd rather have a white dragon than be holding out for a level that we don't even get to. Who knows, we might just take five years to get to 12th level. . . why hello red. . .

gold dragons are the bizomb IMO...

reds are powerful but very destructive, they looooooooove to destroy stuff.

with gold you have the same firepower but less appetite for pure devastation.

it's worth the wait.

What do you need to get a shadow dragon familiar? a breath weapon that is practically a maxed ennervation or better is super fantastic.

I'd put it at 15th. The book doesn't mention non-true dragons.

:uh-huh:
Sounds like a missprint to me.
I'd just say you can take it at 6th.

the 7th level prerequisit is not a misprint. Look at the Improved Familiar feat in the DMG. It also has several familiars only available at caster level 7. You are allowed to take the feat at 6th level, it just won't do you any good then.:b:

Think about this:
At 14th level you could have a gold dragon familiar!
Not only does it have an ecl of 13, it also has granted abilities!!! but now to the cool part: I play a gnome wizard, at 14th level he has a gold dragon. The gold dragon wyrmling is medium size, my gnome is smal... He can FLY on his FAMILIAR!!!! cool!
Now THAT is worth a feat!

Most DMs allow any PC to delay taking a feat just for this reason. There's no good reason why a PC can learn a feat ONLY at those certain points and not later.

What about a Radiant Dragon Familiar?

What level would Wizard have to be to get one of those??

Do those DM's also allow you to take your skill points later? After all, there's no good reason that you have to get better at those skills at that particular time and not later.

Logic there seems somewhat flawed to me.
