Ok, I thought it'd be fun to throw a dragon lich at my party, but when I go and look at my MM, it says that the template is for humanoids, but that there are Lich Dragons. Where whould I go aobut finding said template? MM2 or 3? Or in the Draconomicon, or am I just barking up the wrong tree - as in there really is no template, the MM just says they're "out there." Help, please?

Draconomicon (v3.5); Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (v3.0).

However, the Dracolich is very weak compared to a normal Lich.

If you want to be sadistic, make the dragon a Walker in the Waste 10. That way it becomes a Dry Lich.

Or, since you're the DM, just make it a normal Lich. Nothing can stop you.

As noted, the dracolich is a pretty weak template. I'd use the standard lich array, perhaps with modifications to represent the dragon's nature.

Perhaps the phylactery is the dragon's hoard. A dragon lich returns to existence 1d10 days after its destruction only if its hoard is at least ... 10% intact. That is, unless a pile of coins from its hoard (at the time of destruction) equalling 10% of the total original value still exists, the dragon can't return. If enough of the hoard is reuinited, the dragon lich reforms, even if centuries have passed.

Perhaps the hoared phylactery, rather than being the entire hoard, is made up of a few hundred special coins, made of a material suited to the dragon.

What if a dragon (or another type of non-humanoid monster) polymorphs into a humanoid, and then successfully completes the lichdom ritual (whatever it is)?

They die, change back into their original form and get raised as a lich of the appropriate type (?) The phylactery in this case might be anything designated by the caster, including a dragon's hoard. A dragon attempting such an outcome would be well advised to invest in furniture, tapestry and other exotic items that won't be easily hauled out by adventurers.
