| RavinRay04-19-04, 08:56 AM | I thought I'd start this thread so that we know what Dragon Magazine articles there are relating to dragons. I got a back issue of Dragon #313 (Feb/Mar 2003), which has an article about dragon psychoses - five mental afflictions can can radically change a dragon's behavior. Though I can't replicate them in full, I'll give a brief overview (they're all acquired templates, BTW). Nameless: the dragon eliminates all references to its name and eventually forgets its own name and loses its spellcasting abilities. Ravening: the dragon develops a huge appetite and goes on rampages to sate its hunger. Riddled: the dragon becomes obsessive with creating and solving mind games and puzzles (seems particularly suited to copper dragons, IMO). Spellhoarding: the dragon obsessively collects spells, spellbooks, and arcane items to the exclusion of non-magical treasure. Wandering: a kenderish dragon who likes nothing more than to travel, cutting down on sleep. So, I thought, can everyone list those Dragon Magazine issues that have draconian articles (3e and 3.5e) and give a brief overview of the article? Thanks. Issue 313, BTW, also has an article about psi-spells, which is a combination of psionics and magic (perfect for gem dragon and half-gem dragon wizards and sorcerers). And, in the spring "In the Works" (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20040418a), there is a July release for Serpent Kingdoms, a "192-page Forgotten Realms hardcover that details various serpentine races throughout Faerūn, including yuan-ti, nagas, dragons, and various lizard races" (taken verbatim). |
| RavinRay04-25-04, 02:30 AM | Dragon 300 is where the fiendish dragons (howling, pyroclastic, rust, Styx, Tarterian) by James Wyatt were first published. There are some differences in info with the fiendish dragon entries in Draconomicon particularly with the CR's (I suspect); but the book supersedes the magazine. Still, if there are any more differences, you can point them out here. |
| Lankin the Mad Mage04-25-04, 08:15 AM | The main difference is that the magazine had DECENT ARTWORK!!! I Truly Hate how the rust and pyroclastic dragons were portrayed in the draconomicon! The art in dragon magazine for these hellish monsters was AWESOME and extremely evocative. It was art. In the draco, however, we have some extremely small crayon-smudges that are supposed to look like something frightening.:bored: Dragon 316 had lots of draconic feats (which were later replicated by Draconomicon), dragon-related PrC's (which were not replicated), aragon PrC (dragon Mystic) plus info on draconic tactics. |
| RavinRay06-12-04, 06:52 AM | Lankin, I'm holding my copy of Dragon 316 right now (espionage theme), and can't find any draconic info. The preview for Dragon 317 says that there are Central American-themed dragons (updated rain or Maztican dragons aka Tlalocoatl?) and since this came out after Draconomicon (March 2004), they are not listed. Can anyone list down their names, alignments, and breath weapons? Thanks. |
| Kastas06-12-04, 02:30 PM | Unfortunately, the preview is a bit misleading. None of the six Central American monsters presented in 317 are dragons. Also, Dragon 208 has dragon magic, dragon equipment and magic items, and dweomered dragon scales (magic items made from the scales of dragons). Incidentally, that last article is accompanied by the best black dragon artwork I've ever seen. |
| Lankin the Mad Mage06-13-04, 02:32 PM | Oh, I'm dreadfully sory!!! It was 296, not 316! Sorry! The july issue of Dragon magazine. I always mix up the numbers!! |
| myriadchaos06-13-04, 07:11 PM | So has anybody picked up Dragon #321 The issue involves planar dragons from Bytopia, Arborea, Mechanus, the Beastlands and the Outlands. Plus the Archdragon template (i.e. Evil, Good, Lawful and Chaotic.) :) |

That was supposed to be my April Fool's joke, whereby the dragon's age categories make it transform like a modron. I hope the real one behaves like a modron, too. How does the Archdragon template compare in power to, say, the Celestial, Fiendish, Axiomatic, and Anarchic templates when these are applied to dragons? (The Elite Opponents column gave us an example weeks ago of a celestial wyvern.) |
| Amaron Blackthorn06-14-04, 01:14 PM | Does anyone know if they are going to give savage species lists for playing the chromatic and gem dragons?? |
| JoshRodriguez06-17-04, 08:42 AM | I don't think they ever will. Dragons progress by age category and they age verrah verrah slowly. |

How does the Archdragon template compare in power to, say, the Celestial, Fiendish, Axiomatic, and Anarchic templates when these are applied to dragons? (The Elite Opponents column gave us an example weeks ago of a celestial wyvern.) The planar dragons from 321 and their breath weapons are as follows: Adamantine (NG, Bytopia) - Line of fire and cone of hold monster gas Arboreal (CG, Arborea) - Cone of razor-sharp thorns Axial (LN, Mechanus) - Cone of force Beast - (NG or CG, Beastlands) - Cone of cold and electricity Concordant (N, Outlands) - Line of antithetical energy (deals damage from alignments opposed to the target) Following the rules exactly as written, the Celestial, Fiendish, Axiomatic, and Anarchic templates are more powerful because they can increase the dragon's CR by +2, rather than +1 as the archdragon template does. However, they are not actually that useful because those templates duplicate or only slightly improve a number of abilities that dragons already have (DR and SR, for example). The archdragon template, on the other hand, offers a number of special abilities designed specifically for dragons. Each dragon with the template gets improved flying, an aligned aura (effects vary by alignment), a special quality for their breath weapon (evil archdragons' breath weapons spread demon fever disease, for example), access to three cleric domains, a number of immunities, telepathy, permanent true seeing, and energy resistances. In my opinion, the archdragon template is much more useful than the others. |
| EatFlan06-22-04, 01:38 PM | anyone here help me out w/the info on a dragon item in magazine 308 called the fanged ring? price/what it does would be great thanks! |
| Amaron Blackthorn06-27-04, 09:32 PM | anything about getting the Savage Species progession for the chromatic or the gem dragons? |
| Seraph of Babel07-01-04, 01:37 PM | Doesn't dragon #320 give some stuffs for playing a dragon? http://www.paizopublishing.com/dragon.shtml There's a dragon issue on dragon mystic PrC and some dragon hunter type PrCs. |
| Amaron Blackthorn07-01-04, 01:41 PM | I think it only gives info on the metallic dragons. :( |
| Lankin the Mad Mage07-08-04, 01:13 PM | Originally posted by Seraph of Babel There's a dragon issue on dragon mystic PrC and some dragon hunter type PrCs. That was the one I was talking about, but I kept addling the number. It was the first dragon mag I ever bought, and it alone made me buy every single mag since. |
| krichaiushii07-08-04, 02:14 PM | A listing of what Dragon magazines deal with dragons... Here's a start (http://www.aeolia.net/dragondex/). Go to the Master Index, and look under "D". Be forewarned that much of this is 2d edition or earlier, but can still be looted for ideas. If you have the CD-ROM archive of Dragon, you will be much happier a person. LOTS of stuff on dragons. |
| Sarig the Genie07-09-04, 03:46 PM | I'm rather happy about the new Planar Dragons, in 321. :D |
