| Grug the Just03-01-04, 05:57 PM | This is an idea that I had that needs some fine tuning. My character wants to build a dragon mech-like airplane as personal transport but, I'm not sure how to really price a construct mostly because rules for building a construct don't really appear anywhere. Hopefully the spellcasting equivalent to Complete Warrior will be out before my character needs this done. Anyway here is the stat. block I haven't put in the all the special qualities and special attacks into the stat. block because they may be subject to change. As for criticism please do so as though it had all the aforementioned abilities. The Aujir Vivex (The Bronze Victory) Large Construct (My character is small size) Hit Dice: 15d10+30 (112hp) initiative: +0 Speed: 30 ft., fly 100 ft. (average) Armor Class: 19 (-1 size, +10 natural), touch 9, flat-footed 19 Base Attack/Grapple: +11/+21 Attack: Bite +16 melee (2d6+6) Full Attack: Bite +16 melee (2d6+6) and Tail Slap +11 melee(1d8+8) Space/Reach: 10 ft./5ft. (10 ft reach with bite) Special Qualities: Construct Traits, DR 5/ Adamantine, Immunity to Electricity, Fast Healing 1 Saves: Fort +5, Ref +5, Will +5 Abilities: Str 22, Dex 10, Con -, Int -, Wis 11,Cha 10 Challenge Rating: ??? (possibly 8-10) Keep in mind that this is a mix of magic and steam punk technology. Steam Cloud: On command the Aujir Vivex can emit a cloud of steam that will either engulf the entire ship in a 20 ft. cube of steam or by releasing the bottom vents alone it will simply cover the bottom half of the Aujir Vivex. This can be dispersed by a wind in excess of 40 mph. Breath Weapon: The construct has a single breath weapon a line of lightning 80 ft. long that deals 8d6 points of electricity damage. (Reflex Save DC 17) This can be used once every 1d4 rounds. Grappling Shot: (Okay, with this I wanted it to be a balista-like shot that pierces the enemy, gets stuck and then can be reeled in.)From its mouth it fires a balista-like spike attached by a chain so it can be reeled in. The shot deals 2d6+6 points of piercing damage. It is a ranged attack that can fire to a maximum range of 80 ft. When it hits it immediately starts an effective grapple with a total bonus equal 4+(Damage dealt). If it succeeds the target is stuck by the attack, and to remove himself from the arrow must succeed a Strength check DC 4+(Initial Damage dealt). The shot reels in at a rate of 40 ft. per round. The target stuck by the shot however can make an opposed grapple check pull the Aujir Vivex down to the ground.(although I'm not sure about the rate in which this would happen) While this attack is being used the bite attack cannot be used effectively until the shot is fully retracted. (This is the only ability that I'm kind of not sure of entirely.) Immunity to Electricity: The Aujir Vivex takes no damage from electricity, instead any attack that deals electric damage heals 1 point of damage per 3 points of damage the attack would otherwise deal. Fast Healing 1: Due to a "flaw" in the construction of the Aujir Vivex's engine, the engine gives off a charge of 3 points of electricity damage directly to the construst every round. Underwater Funtions: While underwater it gains a swim speed of 50 ft. and only the bite and grappling shot work effectively. Also the cockpit area fills with a bubble of air that will last indefinately. Construction: The Aujir Vivex's body is constructed from bronze, steel, and adamantine weighing 5,000 pounds and costing 8,000gp. Assembling the body requires a DC 20 Craft(armorsmithing) check. CL 10th; Craft Construct, the spells are from Arcana Unearthed Campaign Setting. Cost: (I wouldn't know how to price this so I estimated about 100,000gp.) So, like I said, critisize as though it had all of these abilities. |

| Feneem03-04-04, 12:31 AM | You might want to change the damage it takes to something other than electricity just to avoid confusion when people see the immunity to electricity. There is a Harpoon type weapon is sword and fist (3.0) that is very similar to your grappleing shots reel in ability. You may want to take a look at it. If I remember correctly it's done a bit differently though. Does the steam deal damage, if so what type? Does it grant concealment (I assume so), if so how much. You may want to reference a spell like obscuring mist to ensure compatability. |
| Grug the Just03-04-04, 01:21 AM | As for your first comment, I don't follow what you mean. I'll take a look at sword and fist. As for the steam I was going to use obscurring mist as a reference but I'm use Arcana Unearthed an the spell is slightly different. The reasoning behind the steam cloud was to conceal the ship in flight, just to look like a cloud. |

I'm new so take this with a grain of salt... You probaly should allow a lower Str check to resist being pulled in/ pull the ship in on its own line instead/ pull the ship alond by the chain/etc. sort of a tug of war type thing... This might be good with a Giant servant (Shoot out the chain, have him pick it up and pull you along <Why? Um, who cares, maybe you just want to, maybe your primary purpolsion gave out whatever)... Just a thought... |
| Grug the Just03-04-04, 06:01 PM | I'm kinda surprised I overlooked that. I'll edit that in right now. |
| Feneem03-05-04, 10:57 AM | Whoops, I just proved myself right by misreading the fast healing section. You might be better off clarifying that by cutting the damage and just leaving it as generic fast healing. |
| gino03-26-04, 03:43 PM | It's damn powerful ! And damn nice as well ! Did you think about seeking inspiration in Kwalish's Apparatus (this was its name in 2nd Ed) ? from the SRD : Apparatus of the Crab: This item appears to be a large, sealed iron barrel, but it has a secret catch (Search DC 20 to locate) that opens a hatch in one end. Anyone who crawls inside finds ten (unlabeled) levers: The device has the following characteristics: hp 200; hardness 15; Spd 20 ft., swim 20 ft.; AC 20 (–1 size, +11 natural); Atk +12 melee (2d8, 2 pincers). Lever (1d10) Lever Function 1 Extend/retract legs and tail 2 Uncover/cover forward porthole 3 Uncover/cover side portholes 4 Extend/retract pincers and feelers 5 Snap pincers 6 Move forward/backward 7 Turn left/right 8 Open “eyes” with continual flame inside/close “eyes” 9 Rise/sink in water 10 Open/close hatch Operating a lever is a full-round action, and no lever may be operated more than once per round. However, since two Medium characters can fit inside, the apparatus can move and attack in the same round. The device can function in water up to 900 feet deep. It holds enough air for a crew of two to survive 1d4+1 hours (twice as long for a single occupant). When activated, the apparatus looks something like a giant lobster. Strong evocation and transmutation; CL 19th; Craft Wondrous Item, animate objects, continual flame, creator must have 8 ranks in the Knowledge (architecture and engineering) skill; Price 90,000 gp;Weight 500 lb. Anyway, just my $2... [edit : pay attention to CL 19th, your Construct seem overpowered to that regard] |
| Lord Arkhaven03-26-04, 04:00 PM | I really like it. I would however drop the balista shot all together. It's a bit wonky and will probably cause you more problems than it's worth. CR 9 |
| Mithral Icesilver03-27-04, 11:59 AM | For grappling shot, take a look at the grappling crossbow (Masters of the Wild). |
