Shroud_The_Warlock 05-05-07, 12:54 PM	Is there a formula of any sort to assign LA to dragons greater than juvenile? Any standard conventions, or do I just "wing it"?
NerdNumber1 05-05-07, 03:42 PM	Creatures without a listed LA are not meant as PC races. This is why balors don't have LA. If, as a DM, you want to use such a creature, you'll have to wing it. I would not suggest this, because it would be difficult to run.
FatMonkey13 05-05-07, 07:56 PM	Unfortunately there is not. Critters generally lack a LA for a few reasons. 1) They are so high that a player can't play it. A player could be epic and but it seems that there are almost no monsters that support this (except in the epic level handbook). Examples are some of the more powerful outsiders and dragons. 2) The monster has some extremely powerful or unbalancing ability that can totally destroy the balance of the game. Creatures that have access to spell like abilities with high XP or gp costs (such as Wish), can grow in size, or control nigh infinite minions are examples. 3) The monster is simply unsuitable for a PC. Examples include creatures with 3 or less intelligence. Soldarin's ECL calculator is OK for many of the balanced official monsters but is easily abused if used for design or to determine balance. YabaTheWhat's Feature Points system is more accurate but more complex and can be used as a design tool but it produces some controversial results and has some controversial assumptions (All Ability scores are equal, +4 to a score at 1st level is acceptable, and so on).
runestar 05-05-07, 10:56 PM	The epic leadership feat in the SRD has ECLs for dragons above lv20. Think someone once interpolated this with the existing ECLs in the MM, and the closest trend he could find was an average of +1LA every 2 extra age categories.:)
