Hi all, first up I do not have the Draconomicon, so it might have been covered in that book, but here goes..

I like the image of characters riding dragons, but i dont like intelligent dragons being sub-servant to a mortal even if they are young and all (the dragon that is).

My current sort of idea is that dragons are pretty much just powerful beasts up until they reach an older age catergory, when they 'mature' (if thats the right word), and become the intelligent, hoard gathering dragons presented in the Monster Manual.

If you guys got any better solutions to the problem or any comments, go for it, as this has been bugging me for some time now

Cheers

Just do it with drakes and other non-"true dragon" dragons.

If you think about it, even the dragons from Pern seem more like some kind of non-true dragon.

If you have a dragon mount it becomes more like a partner than a servant.

If it doesn't like what you are doing it will leave you.

Note that it should be considered another member of the party. It should get treasure, respect, and credit just like other party members.

The Dragonlance campaign setting handles this especially well, saying that the dragon must be of your alignment, he must be treated with respect, and provided with a hoard of at least 1000 gold per HD. Otherwise, it will simply leave.

They also introduced a feat in the bestiary that lets medium dragons carry medium riders, so you can actually have a practical dragon mount at mid-levels.

Just sticking to the MM, you've got a lot of options for a dragon-type mount. A wyvern is the most obvious choice. A dragonne would work as well. Failing that any large half-dragon creature that looks appropriate would make a great mount. A half-dragon deinonychus is actually pretty awesome and has a fly speed of 120 ft, a breath weapon, and a large amount of physical attacks without being intelligent enough for personality conflicts to come into play.
