sabrewolf 01-25-05, 08:12 PM	Way long ago, in a time i was starting to DM and i barely dreamed on having dragons any campaign (even thise i played).. Once i recall reading, somewhere on the web, about a special rite made by a person to ascend beyound his own nature and become a dragon... all i recall of such thing now a days is that it required five different scales, each given by a dragon out of free will to the person and that such rite/spell/whatever was hardly known to non dragons - but then any special / great magical lore is allways rare to find, eh.. :D Well, The spell is of little matter, but the dragon i recall is the reason of my doubts - and the focus of this thread: it mentioned the new dragon gaining qualities of the five scales used and the elements imbued in them.. Sure, a dragon with elemental imunity (except sonic) and able to let out any of the five breath type at will sound a little overpowered.. but time and again i wondered about it and thought i should make this "chromatic" or "rainbow" dragon´s stats... Abilites, breath damage, DCs, saves... these could be found comparing thedragons and finding average numbers.. then comparing back to use one kind of dragon with some minor tweaking instead of building it all from scratch.. yet.. What about the elemental imunity? and the multi-breath ?? what would these be worth in ECL/CR increases..? :thinks: :confused: Since he´d have no exact element (or all at once), i´d cut out his spell-like habilities or at least replace them for one or two, like polimorph - though i´d give it so limited to a single humanoid shape.. Where goes the ECL/CR now? I´m seeking for any and all insights about this as i´m planing using this idea somewhen in my campaign.. either as a possibility for the pcs or a plotline for an npc.
RavinRay 01-26-05, 05:15 AM	Here are some ideas you can use. The tempest from MM2 has all four elemental subtypes. If you want to give your character all those subtypes, consider giving it just resistance, not immunity, from energy-based attacks. Note that the four breath weapons of chromatic dragons, based on fire (red), cold (white), acid (green and black), and electricity (blue), do not exactly correspond to the four elements. Same case for metallic dragons. Since none of them have sonic breath weapons (but there are two gem dragons that do), yes, don't give him sonic immunity or resistance. So far, this covers elemental and energy abilities.

Yep, I know the five breaths and their four energies do not correspond exactly to the four elements, being more like aspects of them.. but this corresponding of energyand element is largely used, being for sub-type classifying or spell-wise... well, thanks a lot for thy comments.. :w00t: I´ve been wondering about the matter (and night shift work is just perfect for that :D ) and moving beyond that remnants of memory from the original idea (plus comments i get ;) ), i might give them one imunity and the rest being resistance (all 40? 20? :thinks: or maybe 40 with only the imunity oposite being 20..).. I´m planning them to be more neutral aligned - as nature / elementals - and their look, imunity/resistances, spell like abilities and the like to rflect that, i.e. those that tend more to earth element among the four ones would be imune to acid, have earth related spells, etc.. As for their relations to dragons, i´ll use only chromatic and metalic oens for the rite/spell, and discard the seccondary breath of the metalic ones... Alignment wise, being based on the view of the noble/wise dragons they might as well be lawfull, and for their elemental / nature aspect tendencies, nautral.. but i might just as well restrict it jsut to non-chaotic non-evil, since i doubt any dragon would even consider helping a lesser "two-legger" to ascend to true dragonkind if not honourable at least partiely and surely not an evil one.. And a new bit for comment/helping.. naming.. "rainbow" dragon sound a little too flashy and colorfull and i´m not planing on them to be a living prismatic show of light, :yuck: not to say there are the prismatic dragons already.. hmmm.. what of pearlescent dragons? (think i´ll add that effect to their scales.. hmm..).. or maybe that would be their name among humanoids while dragons call them in a less nicknamed and more honoured way (like the two examples on the thread title..)..

RavinRay 03-07-05, 04:09 AM	One quick addendum... A breath weapon that combines different energy damages (split the damage evenly among the HD), or add unholy damage to the breath weapon (like the hellfire wyrm). Make it a paragon of evil, so give it an alignment subtype, the first for any Prime Material dragon that I know of. (Few, if any, PM monsters that I know of have an alignment subtype - I could be wrong.)

Heh.. in fact i do have ELH, but though my original idea might end up epic and at least sound as such, i´m seeking not to go cross that line right ahead. And as a note on RavinRay´s comments and yours, GY: Instead of prismatic energy i´m aiming at the elemental ones.. thinking on an ability akin to the metabreath for energy substitution as a race ability with maybe a +2 to reload time instead of +1.. thus shifting between breaths though with some extra time to re-tune it´s inner energies.. something like that.. Yet, thanks for the comments, though.. ;) it keeps my mind working..
