11-17-05, 04:51 PM Does anyone know how the designers got those numbers (the table listing dragon overland flying speeds, MM, dragon entry, the general part)? A dragon that has listed fly speed of 100 can cover 15 miles in an hour, but 24 if it hustles (instead of 30)?

And what would overland fly speed of a dragon with 120 ft. fly speed be (fang dragon, from Draconomicon)?

Pretty easy to figure out: 120 x 10 (rounds per minute) x 60 = 72,000' per hour (or roughly 13.6 miles per hour.); hustling speed would result in 240 x 10 x 60 = 288,000' per hour (roughly 54.5 miles per hour) assuming hustling overall equates to double the fly speed.

Thanks. I figured it wouldn't be hard to calculate, but, aside from feet, inches and pounds, my experiences with the Imperial Units (or whatever they're actually called) is severely limited.

Doh! Silly me. I just realised that 1 mile is approximately 1600 metres :P

However, it seems your math is a bit off there. You doubled hustling speed twice. 240 x 10 x 60 should be 144,000, not 288,000. That would give hustling fly speed of 27.2 mph (double the normal overland fly speed per hour).

And, still the numbers given in the MM table don't make sence. This bugged me, so I googled the conversion page, and found out 1 mile = 5280 ft.

With a base fly speed of 100, a dragon covers 60,000 ft. in an hour. Divided by 5280, that gives 11.36 mph. Table gives 15 mph (and 24 mph with hustle!). Some weird rounding up.

Base fly speed of 150 ft. gives 17.045 mph. MM rounds it up to 20. Hustle is 40.

Base fly speed of 200 ft. comes out at 22.72 mph. This is where things really get weird. MM lists overland flight at 30 mph.

Fly speed 250 ft. is about 28.4 mph, however MM lists it as 40 mph.

If it weren't for the latter two, I'd have figured they rounded the results up, to the nearest 5-mile increase.

Oh, well. I guess I'll change the 100 feet overland hustle entry to 30 mph. And fnag dragons will fly at 17 mph, or 34 if hustling, and covering 136 miles in a day's flight.

The exact answer is movement per round multiplied by 0.114 (gives miles/hour) times 8 to give miles/day covered (non-hustle). The PHB and some other places where the max speed they're using as an example is less than 60'/round, multiplying by 0.10 is a close enough approximation that it's used just to make the math easier.

I don't know how to make tables or table-like entries, so I'll just type the relevant data from the Dragon entry in the MM/SRD. The number in parentheses is what the result would be if the formula (Speed x 0.114) was used.

Fly speed: 100 ft.
Overland Speed/Hour: 15 miles (11.4)
Overland Hustle/Hour: 24 miles (?!)
Overland Speed/Day (8 Hrs.): 120 miles (91.2)

Fly speed: 150 ft.
Overland Speed/Hour: 20 miles (17.1)
Overland Hustle/Hour: 40 miles
Overland Speed/Day (8 Hrs.): 160 miles (136.8)

Fly speed: 200 ft.
Overland Speed/Hour: 30 miles (22.8)
Overland Hustle/Hour: 60 miles
Overland Speed/Day (8 Hrs.): 240 miles (182.4)

Fly speed: 250 ft.

It's odd. There's some wild rounding-up going on there :)

11-20-05, 04:50 PM You also have to remember the Dragon entry says that they are stronger flyers than other creatures... so as Midnight Lightning mentioned in my thread the formula shouldn't be the same for a non dragon flyer...
