Hi,

I've always wanted to play a dragon, but they're too high and don't seem to map well. Without making it myself, I was wondering if there are any savage species progressions for dragons - either official or fan made around?

There are a couple Dragon Issues that do it, but I don't know the issue numbers. Sorry. One is for evil Chromatics and one is for good metallics.

As a DM, I had a player that wanted to play as a dragon... I ruled that it would be unbalanced to have him play a dragon when the other players were just starting out... ie... lvl 1 clr. lvl 1 ftr lvl 1 rog.

So, in an effort to bridge the gap... I decided that the character could have a draconic bloodline.... See Unearthed Arcana.....

...with a catch...

This player had to create a bio that would explain his heritage... but would also pick up a phobia that would also 'progress'

that way his character got stronger with the bloodline.... but balanced out - a bit - with his increasing phobia..

it worked really well for us.... :)

Dragon magazin 332 has a progression for evil dragons, and dragon 320 for good dragons.

No, the Draconomicon doesn't have a savage progression for dragons, only rules for advancing existing PC dragons.

would you please clarify your question? how do you mean they're too high and don't map well?

does that mean they have too high of an ecl and are too large to play in dungeon-like settings.... (smaller space and corridors etc...)

if so, that's why i suggested a blood-line.. you could have play a 'traditional race' and loose the size dilema's while gaining access to a benefits of having a draconic heritage.....

-or- are you looking for a way to tweak your draconic character to make him more suitable for gameplay?

A bloodline...
Thats even less than a Half Dragon and imo totally not worth it.

perhaps.... that's the great thing about fantasy role-play is the number of options available...

I mentioned this in the previous post.. because it worked.... for me and the player... he didn't apply a template resulting in an ecl that was off-paced from his comrades... and he still had access to a number of draconic abilities... ie: Str increase, Natural Armor increase, Elemental (fire) resistance, Water-breathing, Breath-Weapon, and Dragon Affinity - to name a few from recollection.

In my case,,, it actually helped flavor the story line we were playing as he was trying to research his past as his actually character didn't understand - until learning of his heritage - why he was different from everyone else... and then rescuing his father. and it was really a lot of fun.

his phobia - though there was several that we could have chosen from was Hypnophobia (a fear of sleeping) ... this was awesome in gameplay... it certainly presented its share of challenges and opportunities..... guess who always offered to stand watch first.... and needed sleep potions or spells

it wasn't until the 'spell' holding his father, a gold wyrm, in a hibernatic sleep was broken, that the player was able to get his first, un-aided, good night's sleep.

Was this successful... for me and my players... absolutely,,,, would i do it again,,, if the situation warrented it and I felt the players could handle the difference ...

would this work for everyone... probably not.... :)

In one of the suppliments there's a similar class. Start off as normal for your race and as you take levels you progress towards half dragon through reawakening your heritage. Wings, strength, size enhancements etc.

I think you're referring to the Dragon Disciple. It's in the 3.5 DMG and (iirc) Tome and Blood.

Dragon Disciple (DMG 3.5 or Tome and Blood). Love the flavor, like the mechanics.

Thats the one now if there was only an epic progression to full dragon.

Savage Species, the Monster Manual, the Draconomicon, and the Epic Handbook should answer all of these questions.
The MM has age category progression charts and all of the necessary stuff,
SS has everything you need to know about playing monsters (Dragons),
Draconomicon has all the additional information any draconic PC needs to know, and the Epic Handbook has information for some advanced dragons and stuff.
