Dragon's Breath Weapon [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-28-04, 09:45 PM I had posted a thread like this earlier, except that I have found something out. It says in the player's handbook 3.0 that a dragon's breath weapon is considered a supernatural ability. Now, a supernatural ability is still considered something magical which is able to be suppressed by dead magic areas and anti-magic areas. Now, in the 3.0 Dungeon Masters guide, it states this on page 3.0 under Breath Weapon " The creature is actually expelling something from it's mouth (rather than Conjuring it by means of a spell or some other magical effect). it is stating right there that it isn't a magical effect, therefore it isn't supernatural. Let me know what you think.

10-28-04, 11:27 PM A dragon's breath weapon is supernatural. That's very explicitly stated just about everywhere the ability is mentioned.

Except that in the DMG it says that it isn't magical.

10-29-04, 05:03 AM You're referring to the 3.0 Core Books; in 3.5, both books say it is supernatural (unless noted otherwise). The Draconomicon, which is newer than these two, confirms this. Now this is for dragons; there may be monsters with the "Breath Weapon (Ex)" line wherein this is strictly a biological ability.

That DMG passage states that breath weapons are generally not magical, not that a breath weapon is always nonmagical. Dragon breath is Su - that's very very clear.
