I've noticed that dragons' skill points are equal to (HD+3)x(6+Int). This seems correct, at first. However, unlike other monsters, dragons advance in ages, thus a, let's say, 40 HD red great wyrm was once just a wyrm, an adult, a wyrmlyng - with lower intelligence modifiers.

A wizard that had 15 Int at first level and has 24 Int at 20th(ability increase, aged, and a couple of wishes) doesn't have 23x(2+7)=207 skills points. She has much less, for all those levels with less than 7 int modifier. The same thing is true for dragons.

As it is right now, older dragons have insane skill ranks - due to the fact that they have high int modifiers multiplied by many, many HDs.

Very true, but to have to back track all the Ints of every age catagory to find the true amount of skill points would take a long time and would just complicate things. This way cuts down the already large amount of time required to write up a dragon anyway.
That said, there is no reason why you shouldnt back track like that if you have the time.

Actually the Draconomicon (at least I think that was the book) says that dragons gain retro-skill points when they attain higher intelligence.

Probably because of two things. Dragons get old as dirt (and a bit older) and as said before, it would take ages to write on up if you had to calculate skill points seperately for all hid dice ;)

I thought there'd be something in the Draconomicon about that, but I didnt have the time to wade through it.
Seems like its another one of those 'dragons are better than everything else' clauses. Not that I'm complaining, dragons are better than everything else ;)

And their minions, not to talk about favourite food.

(I had a red dragon npc once, who liked virgin human meet quite a lot. But then he got tired of it, when his favourite food got younger and younger with less and less meat on it ; )

Seriously though, it's a Dungeons and DRAGONS game, when I make a dragon, it's not just a big scary monster (well, it's that too, but you get the point)
