Dragon skinning? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-07-06, 07:53 PM My characters killed a young red dragon in my game. One of them came up with the idea of skinning it to make armour and cutting out any worthwhile innards.

Curious if any dragon or anyone has had experience in DM'ing this kind of stuff? I said to skin it and make use of the hide you would need some skill in skinning and tanning. But I am not sure what DC to set it at and even if they can do it untrained. I also have no idea what part of a dragon, apart from its hide, is worth anything.

Any pointers, ideas or articles appreciated!

05-07-06, 08:39 PM I'd say they'd need fairly good (Like, DC 35-35) Craft (skinning) and Craft (Leatherworking or Armorsmithing) checks. A young red (Large size) can produce one set of masterwork armor for a Medium creature.

And for other parts of it, its horde is worth something.

05-07-06, 10:59 PM Also in the free 2ed module "Cult of the dragon" available for download at the wotc site. It's a big hassle though - unable to use slashing weapons or magic against the dragon, and skinning must be carried out with a +3 weapon or better to avoid spoiling it. Then you have to find a powerful mage to enchant it...

How's the 3.5 version changed? :)

05-08-06, 03:11 AM Craft (taxidermy) and appropriate tools. And the nerve necessary to defile the corpse of a species without equal in regards to power and the ability to hold a grudge.

I think it was the 30th Anniversary Issue, it had a Fighter hurling a spear of Frost into a Red Dragons shoulder.
