In my new gamegroup one of the players want to be some sort of dragon. Usually, this would upset the balance f the game, and in this instance it would disturb it even more, as dragons are regarded as Gods on Earth. It would be like letting a player get to rule the kingdom.

So we sat down and discussed it, and came up with a crazy yet plausible setting:

About 10'000 years ago a great wyrm red dragon was murdered. She spent a happy afterlife in hell, torturing souls. Then, some years ago, one of the mad wizards on the world summoned her soul to do experiments upon. He almost destroyed it, and then infused an elf body with it. She awoke as an CN elf maiden.

Disgusted with said wizard, a group of druids attacked, killed him, and rescued the "elf". So, she's now a reduced dragon soul trapped in an elf body. But some of the draconic traits show through (perhaps give her a draconic bloodline or summat.)

Is this plausible? Any problems I haven't spotted? Any ideas as to how we can show how the soul "shines through" the mortal coil?

Seems perfectly plausible to me.
To bring out the dragon within, how about apply the Draconic template from the Draconomicon. Its essentially a Dragon-touched template, and could work nicely without altering the game balance too much (only +1 LA IIRC).
Or how about just having some minor details that dont alter game balance in the slightest. For example, perhaps her eyes glow red when she gets angry.

Hey, good idea! The best we came up with was her repeatedly jumping out of trees trying to fly....

Well sence dragon blood is often regarded as the cause for sorcerous powers she should probably be a sorcerer

Or dragon disiple is a possibility with some fluff modifications

Well, the whole "cruel arcane experiments upon her soul" business DID unhinge her a bit. As did being reduced from the divine ruler of a kingdom to a lowly morsel.

I'd recommend looking up the half-dragon template class from the Savage progressions article on the wizard's website.
Allow the PC to take levels in the progressions after fulfilling certain quest prerequisites.

Aside from that, the bloodline, and dragon disciple options are both very valid, although maybe a little less drastic then what you may have in mind.

She may have a dragon's soul, but her brain is that of an elf, and in my experience, elves aren't all that bright. -_^
