My setting needs a dragon capable of producing various half-dragon offspring. It seems to me dragons do that primarily with a polymorph spell, available at sorcerer level 8.

If an adult blue dragon, already posessing caster level 5 for being a dragon of that age, were able to gain three level of sorcerer class, would they stack to reach caster level 8? It looks like the CR on such a beast would be 14+3=17.

Or anyone thinking outside the box on how I can get a dragon able to produce half-dragon offspring with a lesser CR than 17?

Thanks.

They could have a magic item that allowed them to polymorph. A medium sized dragon or even a large one could do the deed with out changing shape at all; ( gross but possible) by the same token a female dragon of any size could probably be impregnated by a male of almost any species( also gross but possible). Hope any of those help.

Unless you absolutely must have a Blue Dragon as the parent, then I would suggest using one of the other Dragon species (Bronze, Gold, etc) since many of the other types of Dragons have the innate Alternate Form ability, which allows them to polymorph themselves as a supernatural ability X numbr of times per day. I imagine those are the dragons who primarily produce offspring.

Otherwise, yes a Dragon who takes Sorcerer levels stacks those spellcasting levels with their innate spellcasting abilities. Although personally if I were a dragon I would take prestige class levels instead since you will reap more of a benefit.

Yes I need an blue dragon.

The purpose of the offspring centers around a story line where a lich continually threatens the dragons rule over his territory. The characters enter just as the dragon puts the finishing touches on a fifty year plan to take out the lich. The characters, preparing for a showdown with dragon, will find themselves pawns of the dragon used against the lich. The offspring are other chess pieces.

The blue dragon's strengths (armor and electricity) make an interesting offset to a lich's abilities (touch attack and immunities, among others).

I digress, thanks for the replies so far.

From what you've described, it's not as important to the storyline exactly how the dragon managed to seduce and then impregnate women. So you may want to consider another approach that doesn't rely on shapechanging magic.

For instance, one method for the dragon might be to develop (or discover) a spell on his own that bestows the half-dragon template on unborn children. In the Book of Erotic Fantasy, there are a pair of third-level spells that guarantee a child conceived during procreation will result in either a half-celestial or half-demon (depending on the version cast). An 8th level sorcerer may have developed a similar third-level spell which affects already conceived, but as-yet unborn children and bestows upon them the half-dragon template. Such a spell would be castable from Short range, and would be subject to saving throws, spell resistance, etc.

The general execution of the plan would have the blue dragon casting a concealing spell (e.g., invisibility), getting close enough to a pregnant woman to cast the spell, and hope that the child/mother did not resist the effect. The dragon would most likely repeat this on several subjects/victims, both in order to increase the number of children affected as well as to boost his chances in case one or more targets make their saves.
