Are Dragonne part of the dragon species or are they something else?

They are magical beasts. I don't think they are in any way related to dragons at all.:)

But then, I could be mistaken. Just look at the spawn of tiamat in MM4. Maybe someone with dracononicon can clear this up?:)

Draconomicon doesn't mention the Dragonne at all (it has another monster called Dragonnel though, but it's not related to Dragonne :)).

The Dragonne are probably the result of some ancient magicians mad experiments :D

Also, are they a D&D made monster or are they real mythical creature?

The only wikipedia reference to Dragonne lists it as a DnD-monster, which leads me to believe it is created, not mythological.

I wonder why it says "possesses the most dangerous qualities of a brass dragon and lion" then

Because they possess the most dangerous qualities of a brass dragon and a lion?

they possess the most dangerous qualities of a brass dragon and a lion

Yeah, I wondered if that was a hinting of them being part brass dragon, or merely an experiment which took the brass dragon qualities that made them what they are

You know, this question has the potential to become a rather interesting DnD adventure... Hmm.....

I think the "qualities" aspect is more psychological/mental mindset and not physical resemblance...:P

It's actually a reasonable question. In my game they are among a list of strange experimental creatures, possibly created for a magical war, that have managed to breed true somehow.

I interpret dragonnes to be the lineage of an ancient lion-brass dragon mating event. Since the half-dragon template did not exist as a concept way back in 1e, a half-brass dragon/half lion was not the result. They still have draconic blood running in their veins, though very much diluted. They aren't even included in the list of dragonblood-subtyped monsters in Dragon Magic, though it's reasonable to include them as a variant rule. It's a bit odd, though, that a dragonne's wings are bat-like rather than the ray-like lateral wings of the brass dragon.

Got a response from customer service about this.
Answer: Since they are Large Magical Beasts, with no Dragon listing in their type, then they are not a dragon species. A Pseudodragon is more of a dragon since it has the Dragon Subtype.

No, no, brass dragons evolved from lions, dragonnes are the missing link. Didn't you know that?

LOL
I personally have seen them as the offspring of a Brass and a Lion or Lioness, but over time, they became less draconic in their abilities, as they had more and more offspring by breeding more with lions...so somewhere, some time ago, there would have been the strongest Dragonne with its infusion with true Brass dragon blood, making it a sort of paragon Dragonne, or a Monster of Legend. You guys remember the AD&D Toy line Dragonne? If you do then you know that particular sculpt of the Dragonne is very draconic rather than Lion-like, with its very long draconic tail and huge wings, and two-legged stance, leading me to think of it as the first or one of the first of these new monsters.
I would use that in a campaign as a monster with way more CR (or even possibly we should create a chart for how much Brass dragon vs how much Lion is in them), abilities, Statistics, etc..
I could see a Brass-dragon creating them as stewards or protectors of a favored area, or they could have been created by the Dragon is a fit of lust for a particular Lion or Lionese.
Just ideas...

It seems they should possess the Dragonblood subtype. but of course they don't.

It's a just a species that is very dragon-like but it is not in fact, a dragon.

I mean it's like a whale-shark. It's just a really damn big shark that looks kinda like a whale. It is in no way a whale, it is not related to whales in anyway.... its a shark.... but we call it a whale-shark.

"Look at that Bill a lion with brass scales.... why it must be some kinda half dragon lion thing."

"Sure looks like, Bob, but look over there, there's an entire pride of them. Looks like an independantly breeding species and not just a lone half dragon."

"Right you are... but surely they have draconic heiritage."

"Clearly, let us call them Dragonne. And stop calling me Shirley."

Wasn't there a similar creature in 2E called a Dracosphinx?
runestar

In 3.5, this would probably be replicated by slapping on the half-dragon template on the appropriate creature.

In cult of the dragon, they introduced tons of draconic hybrids, such as draco-hydras etc...

As a cat lover I think the Dragonne deserves a place of honour as a magical beast that is no lesser dragon or half anything.

Anything that plays in the sun acts like a cat has my vote.

Besides the Dragonne and the Behir are about the coolest non dragons in the SRD.
