| gradea03-10-04, 10:42 PM | alright, a lot of people like dragons. the problem is some people save dragons only for encounters with the big bosses. But, if your like me you throw everythign under the sun at your players...but you dont want to cheapen dragons by making them commen, so what do you do? unleash the dragonoids! This isnt a template because i cant think of a way to do the CR, but for basic effects 1/2HD, round down 1/2 Natural armor, round down 1/2 Breath weapon damage, round down 1/2 stat bonus, round down, if no bonus or a penelty just remove a further 2 from it (from 10 to 8) slow down the size progression by doubling the number of smaller age catigories it has (IE if its tiny as a true dragon once and medium twice, it wil be tiny twice and medium four times) sr is a little harder since i dont know how that number is generated, i use 1/2(SR-10)=x, Current, regular dragon of this ages SR-generated X value. Lower DR by 5/+1 Lower spell like abilities by 1 spell level (find something similar) -50 fly speed spells, fear, and sr happen two ages later *NOTE* IMPORTANT! re edited since first posted |
| Murr-Quan Lord #203-11-04, 08:31 PM | Alternately, one could use smaller dragons. :) |
| NestroEmichae03-11-04, 10:54 PM | I use smaller dragons. When you meet the bigger suckers, they typically are capable of wiping the floor with the party on a good day. Gotta love playing them to their intelligence. |
| gradea03-12-04, 04:08 PM | true but these give you more dragons within the lower range, instead of having a CR increase by 2-3 per age |
| NestroEmichae03-12-04, 10:48 PM | There's more than one variety of dragon. I can find one at just above any CR above 1. Thanks to the ELH, I can always make ones with epic CRs. |
| gradea03-13-04, 01:03 PM | well, think about it like this, why would hordes of unrelated wyrmlings get togeather and attack a party in a teritory thats nothing like what they normaly live in? basicly this is just a creature for DMs who like dragons but dont want thier players to either get too bored with them or for players who would inevitably question why this is the tenth time they have had to fight a babby dragon, just how commen are they? Really it all comes down to pointless IC reasons, a black dragon would be more likly to send out a dozen black dragonoids rather then a dozen red wyrmlings, right? I should have posted this earlier, there is one big visual diffrence between them and normal dragons, these are generaly man shaped. |
| NestroEmichae03-14-04, 02:20 AM | If a black dragon is going to send out minions, they'll probably be half-dragons. More fun to make. I never said that the dragons would all be the minions of someone else. Older dragons could have driven them there. Your dragonoid template looks interesting. I may try it sometime. |
| gradea03-14-04, 05:12 PM | half dragon template is +3 cr, a very powerful breath weapon regardless of the creature its on, and other unbalancing factors, assuming the dragon even HAS that many half dragons lieing around, the dragonoids are inteded to be an artificial slave race made by dragons |
