Dragons and Hoarding [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-08-05, 12:17 AM We all know that dragons hoard. That's what makes them dragons. That's what makes them fun to kill.
We all know where the treasure comes from. It comes from the banks and palaces that the marauding dragons are constantly raiding. That's what makes them OK to kill.
We all know where they keep the treasure. They keep it in their lair, generally under their fat, lazy dragon ***es. That's why they need to be killed.
My question is, how do they get the treasure to their lair? How does a reptilian creature with no opposable thumbs move 5,000 gold coins from point A, across mountain range B, to lair C? Do dragons carry large sacks in which they stuff all of their booty? Do they take it back handful by handful? Do they keep a retinue of trained dire badgers to carry it for them? What do they do?
The only reasonable answer I have been able to devise is that dragons have a special "treasure craw", a non-digestive gizzard in which they are able to store would-be additions to their hoards. If this is the case, would a treasure-laden dragon be able to use its breath weapon? Or bite attack, for that matter? How much can this treasure craw hold? What if the dragon sets his eyes on a handful of magical swords? Wouldn't that hurt like a *****?
Any insight?

That's a good idea about that storage gizzard, though it doesn't appear in the standard dragon anatomy in Draconomicon. The book doesn't say anything about not being able to use a breath weapon on a full stomach, so it can still use it.

Personally, I think a dragon can swallow small objects without problem, but stuff like swords pose a risk. Far better for a dragon to use a magic storage or transport spell.

06-08-05, 03:20 AM Dragons have opposable thumbs, or at least "hands" that can be used for spellcasting. I think dragons do things like gather a bunch of treasure into a big bag and then carry the bag to their hoard (if they don't have a magical way of doing it).

Once its there, I've always been under the assumption that the coins and gems pretty much just form a bed for the Dragon, and then other items- swords, chairs, etc are scattered to the sides of the lair, where the dragon can keep an eye on it, but not stab himself with a sword while sleeping.
