Hello

Probably an easy question, but I have to make sure I'm right.

I'm going to run a a young adult red dragon, and I'm considering some useful spells. I though of Bear's Endurance, to boost his hit points. He has 19 hit dice so this will give him 36 extra points. I think this spell can be of use if he is attacked in his lair. My reasoning is that a red dragon probably will fight to death, rather than giving away his treasure.

Are there any other good low levels (1 and 2) spells for a young red dragon? My group is serious in taking this fellow down, and I must be prepared to give them a nasty surprise!

If you're going with Bear's Endurance, I would throw in Cat's Grace & Bull's Strength. In fact, I would prefer either to temp HP. A dragon with a dex bonus to AC can be frightful, especially if it also has Mage Armor.

Mage armor seems perfect ... it's still 1 hour/level right? ... that's 5 hours

Invisibility?

Can also cast cleric spells and those from the Chaos, Evil, and Fire domains as arcane spells. ... check those out too

mage armor isn't bad, and neither is shield (stops magic missles as a plus)

Cat's Grace helps the dragon's achillies heel, it's terrible touch AC and low initiative.

Blur isn't a poor choice either for defense.

Resist Energy is a must for creatures with an energy subtype.

fog cloud isn't a bad choice, especially if the dragon has Blindfighting; it can locate creatures in the fog with it's Blindsense, and if it has reach, can attack them without fear of retaliation.

If your party is running orbs, you will want some elemental resistance to cold(which they will likely use), as well as a means of boosting your touch ac, or perhaps some sort of cover, like obscuring mist or blur. True strike is also nice if you go power attack.

I will use invisibility, mage armor, protection fr elements and shield. I have made a lair with lava pits, and I look forward to charge, from invisbility, and bull rush one character into a lava pit or maybe awesome blow can be used for that purpose.

Thanks!

Disguise Self is one I often have Dragons, particularly evil dragons, use. It works especially well if this red dragon encounter is taking place in terrain where the PCs are likely to expect another type of Dragon. If the PCs think that they are fighting a green dragon then they are more likely than not going to use the big damage spells, many of which deal Fire damage.

Resist Energy is another standby that I find effective.

Just a quick note, building on the fog cloud suggestion. At higher levels, a natural choice for a red dragon is incendiary cloud, as they are immune to the fire damage and still get all the benefits of fog cloud. As an added bonus, the spell helps peel down the more ablative defensive spells (protection from energy) without wasting its breath weapon, so the eventual BW attack is more effective. Good for traps along the entrance to its lair, too.

Give him practiced spellcaster to almost double his caster level(CL9).
