Alignment: Any Treasure: No coins, standard items, no goods Advancement: 4-11HD(medium) At first a polyceran resembles somebody, you can't quite tell who. The next moment it's your friend, standing next to you. Then it's your dead mother. Finally you break through the veil of illusion to confront it in its true form: a barely humanoid glowing shape, darkness sinking from its legs and color dripping from its arms. A polyceran is a being from the dream realm that people often encounter taking it for a person. Sometimes it is somebody they know, othertimes it merely blends in with the dream crowd or plays some role in the night-vision's storyline. Polycerans are themselves only mildly self-aware and generally feel no need to seperate their own identity from that of the person they are imitating. Combat: A polyceran usually does not attack unless its true identity is revealed. When it does it slashes away with little consideration for its own safety. Disguise Appearance(su): A polyceran can appear to resemble any person as if by a disguise self spell. It can designate any specific person known by a creature it encounters but it lacks concious knowledge of these people aside from superficial behavior and their general relation towards the creature. A will save dc:16 (+2 racial bonus) is allowed where appropriate as per the disguise self spell. Even if the ruse is detected, creatures suffer a -1 morale penalty to attack rolls against a polyceran disguised as a close friend or loved one. If a polyceran uses this ability to disguise itself, the disguise check is opposed by a sense motive check instead of a spot check. A polyceran can use this ability as a quickened action. Dream Weapon(pi): A polyceran is armed with a weapon that it can transform to resemble any medium sized simple or martial weapon. It is in all respects identical a +1 magical weapon of that variety. If it's disguise is detected by an opponent, either through a successful sense motive check or a will save, the weapon becames a quivering vague instrument of pyrite and quartz that deals 1d10 base damage of bludgeoning, peircing, or slashing, whichever the polyceran wishes. It can resheath the dream weapon or draw it as a free action. If removed from the polyceran's possession, the weapon vanishes, and it takes a full-round action (provoking AoO) for the polyceran to recreate it. Dripping Color(su): A polyceran that hits with a successful melee or touch attack splashes the opponent with the spectrum of energies its limbs radiate. They take 1 sonic damage, 1 fire damage, 1 electric damage, 1 radioactive damage, and 2 light damage, for a total of 6 points of damage. This damage is dealt automatically each round to a creature a polyceran is grappling. Amorphous(su): A polyceran is not subject to critical hits and flanking. It recieves a +10 racial bonus to escape artist checks. Radiance(ex): A polyceran sheds a 20ft radius of bright light. It can supress or resume this illumination as a quickened action. Waking Dream: A polyceran is in a constant dream-like state. It is equally aware of its surroundings whilst asleep and awake, and can escape any magical sleep as a quickened action. It gains a second save against any mind-affecting effects, and it is immune to the effects of a dream and nightmare spells. |
| Tevish Szat08-30-05, 09:38 PM | neat dreamborn creature... they almost seem like they could be the building blocks of some of the more complex, or at least more solid and defined dream creatures, a blank slate or chunk of clay to be molded, or else the basic form, like lemures, larvae, or lantern archons for their various outsider groups. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.08-30-05, 10:49 PM | Well, sorta. I initially made them to represent all the people you meet in dreams. Presumable your old nemesis, your friend, and your deceased aunt Ethel don't travel to the dream world each time you have the Pistachio nightmare, so then what are those "people" you meet? Their polycerans. I don't really see them as evolving or developing into anything, they're just the extras of the dream world's cast. |
