| traxaddict04-20-05, 08:24 PM | Okay anyone want to explain how the drown is just a cr 8 or a cr 9 according to the errata! It can drown some one on dry land it has 20d12 hd. Feats out the YANG. :OMG! Can some one please Help? Traxaddict Oh yeah Forgot that it also has fast healing 5 |
| Hammerhead04-20-05, 08:27 PM | It does seem like a bit much. I would remove its unholy toughness and have there be a save for its drowning aura. I dont get why it needs to have so much HD if it has unholy toughness (or vice versa) |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht04-20-05, 09:23 PM | Considering that any 8 or 9th level group can totally annihlate it the space of a few rounds, courtesy of Mr. spellcaster, I'd say it's balanced. |
| lugnut7104-20-05, 10:10 PM | Yes the drowned is only truly threatening in tight places. Although in those places it will slaughter most parties. |
| Sildatorak04-21-05, 01:59 AM | AC 19 also means that its 150 hp won't last long, especially if power attacking is involved. |
| Solidcobra04-21-05, 04:31 AM | The MM3 is unbalanced. big frikkin new. We all know it. Seriously, i'd rather face most things than a drowned. Since they aren't likely to appear on a plain field 800ft away, the "only in tight spaces" thing doesn't apply. you're more likely to face them when they climb onto your ship than an open field. |
| was_fired04-21-05, 04:49 AM | The drowned and the corpse collector are results of improper design mechanics. As such these creatures should not exisit as they do. In the case of the drowned they have a save or die ability which does not properly scale to their CR (ie drowning aura). So a drowned is nearly as large a threat against a 20th level part as it is against a 10th level one, this is a result of poorly thought out suffocation rules. The cadaver collector has a save or be removed from combat ability which is opposed by an ability check despite the fact that the DC is determined normally (either used opposed ability checks or saving throw vs 10 + 1/2 HD + Mod do not use ability check vs 10 + 1/2 HD + Mod since ability scores scale more slowly than HD). As such both of these creatures should not exisit as written. |

Concidering you are trying to hold your breath. yeah the hit points are 150 but all it takes is a couple bad rolls and your dead the only thing i can think is that is was designed for eberron meaning you would possible have a warforged in the group and be safe. |
| lugnut7104-21-05, 10:07 AM | That is also true a warforged is totally immune to the drowned effects. |
| The Immortal VonKat04-21-05, 06:31 PM | Well, spellcasting still works if you're out of the range of its drowning aura, so it would be easy to send a few creatures that don't need to breathe (summoned creatures, warforged) to stall the drowned while you sit back and blow the tar out of the drowned with fireballs/lightning bolts/what have you. |
| traxaddict04-21-05, 09:01 PM | Okay well tlkaing about it more i guess it could work as a CR nine not sure. It just still to me seems a bit over powered for a cr nine. I mean if you do get attacked by it in a very closed off space you are going to have a sure fire killer but out in the open i can see it i guess it just kills pc's in the group i play in bacause of the lack of range weapons. most of the pc's just carry a melee weapon and that is it! Thanks for the insight. |
| Dackad04-21-05, 10:59 PM | It's CR is very situationally dependent. In some places, it can easily destroy a party, in others it will get destroyed. I'd say it deserves to be a CR 10 at least, but that's just me. |
| Thuragrun04-21-05, 11:01 PM | I do not think they are that bad. Our ECL 12 party wiped out 2 last weekend. Two fighters, a sorcerer/rogue and a cleric. One of the fighters almost lost it but we lived to fight another day. And our DM is not exactly the go lightly type. |
