We encountered 2 elementals actually, but I cast Hold Monster on the 'Huge' earth elemental. The DM allowed it but it brought up a big question. In the monster manual it states it is immuned to paralysis effects. We came up with that paralysis is physical (carrion crawler fort save)and the hold person mental (will save). What do you think? Should the elemental be immuned to it, or did we do the right thing?

I honestly find a big difference between say, an honest to goodness paralytic spell such as ghoul touch, or a carrion crawler's paralytic touch, versus the effects of a hold type spell. While it may not be wholly ensconced in the RAW, I'd allow the hold spell to work on the elemental.

Good question. I don't know.

But I would say that as long as your DM made a choice to keep the game moving instead of looking it up in the book, what he did was fine.

In the campaigns I've played in, Hold spells have always been considered Paralysis effects for the purposes of immunities. Note that the 2E spell Hold Undead was changed to Halt Undead when they switched over to 3E.

From the SRD under Hold Person:
The subject becomes paralyzed and freezes in place.

After reading this, I would say that the elemental is immune to paralysis. A new spell would have to be created that held elementals.

*nod* Well that sort of settles it then, at least by the RAW anyways. :)

I tend to disagree (probably because it helped us live, LOL)because it is a paralysis from the mind (will save) not the body (fort save).

Is there an email I can ask the 'guru's' for official ruling? It really doesn't matter, but for future reference. Thanks again for the info.

The elemental is immune to hold spells. It makes no difference where the save is coming from, will, reflex or fortitude. It's immune to paralysis, just like dragons.
