Hej folks,
I just wonder about the Earth Glider from the Underdark.

What would happen if this monster grapples a PC and then glides back into the earth?

Guess you are in a narrow tunnel and he "bull rushs" you into the wall.

Or he comes from the bottom just to grap your feet and pull you into the earth.

How'd you handle this? I thought about something like a coupe the grace.

Greetings, your Crazy_DM.

One of my PCs does this in our campaign.

It must succeed in a grapple check to grab its opponent.
Anyone dragged into the earth by this creature dies instantly.

It's difficult to do, but it succeeds every now and then.

*blink* Die instantly? The Earth Glider can swim through stone just fine, but anything it carries with it is just going to hit a solid surface and take some serious pounding.

Why do you say they'd die instantly? That seems a bit over the top.

I suggest looking up the teleport mishap stuff, under the teleport spells, as well as anything else that lets you move in/through earth or other solids, for what you should inflict on someone the glider leaves in a solid matter obstacle. Really, it's the same principle, something like 1d6/5' of earth it must pass through to be in a clear space would seem reasonable to me. An instant kill is just way too over the top, in my opinion.

Except that just because the glider can freely move through stone doesn't mean that whatever it grabs gains that same ability until its dropped and stranded in the a solid. Whatever it grabs is still going to hit a solid mass of earth and stone and be left behind as the glider itself swims into that same solid, it can't just freely drag something back with it.

Yes, it can. One of my PCs has one as a mount. He traverses through solid rock when riding it. It was designed that way on purpose.

You can use the rules of teleportation if you want. That's probably more in line with the rules, but for simplicity and reality sake, we just rule automatic death.

The creature doesn't succeed at its grapple attempt all that often, so in any given fight, it usually only takes 1 enemy down in this fasion - they rest have to be dispatched the old fashioned way.

And any BBEG certainly isn't going to fail its grapple check against a glider, so that isn't a problem either.

It was designed that way on purpose. there is positivly nothing about the monster description of the Earth Gliderwhich leads to the conclusion that they are used as mounts by anybody or that they can take anybody with them on when they travel through earth&stone... if it works that way in your capmpaign SS, it is a house rule... my reading of the creature is the same as StM's.

SS I just realized you might be thinking of the Stone Flyer, which has a very similar ability and are used as mounts... in fact they have an extra sprecial quality called Earth Glide Ride (which allows it to extend its ability to a single rider carrying up to a medium load)... an ability that the Earth Glider itself lacks.

Ah. That certainly clears things up. Yes, it is the Stone Flyer of which I am refering, not the Earth Glider.
