| Archangel_James04-14-06, 12:06 AM | I've decided on doing a quick Easter campaign to give a final light mood before a long dark storyline on Mind Flayers. Simple and light-hearted (mostly), this week's session will involve a quick detour to the Outlands where a giant rogue bunny is attempting to kill a Pelor (by crucifiction). After Pelor's death, the party is called in to steal the bunny's four magic eggs, without which the bunny would convert from a deicidal titan to a mere CR 8 or 9 giant rabbit. Since I want this to be a simple game for the holiday, I've decided on the standard video game progression. Four mini-bosses guard the four eggs, and then the final battle against the weakened rabbit. A god's power is not easily extinguished, however, so the party has three days to complete this task. My problem is those four mini-bosses. I want them all obviously Easter themed, and the more creative and off-the-wall the better. The only idea I really have is a swarm of Peeps. Other than that, I'm blank. Any suggestions would be more than appreciated. Further, if anyone wants to go ahead and stat out some interesting creations, the party is level 6/7 and consists primarily of spell casters and psions. (Specifically, there's a Wizard, a War Mage/Dragon Disciple, a Psion (who might be an Erudite by now), and a Cleric/Wilder.) They all got lucky on their ability scores, so I'm probably looking at CR 5-7 for the mini-bosses. I humbly thank all who contribute, and I apologize if I didn't follow some unwritten guidelines for monster request. I don't spend much time in the monster boards, so I plead ignorance for any format errors. |
| Eclipse Lutgehr04-14-06, 12:48 AM | I'd suggest at least one of them be a Chocolate Golem. A simple conversion from the Flesh Golem (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/golem.htm#fleshGolem) to being made of chocolate. With maybe a fudge breath weapon every 1d4 rounds instead of berserk that acts as a tanglefoot bag. It's magic immunity will certainly cheese off your players while still keeping things "lighthearted". Hmmm... Then maybe a Shambling Mound (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/shamblingMound.htm) that's made out of that plastic grass (if that fits the flavor, if not just leave it as is) that everyone uses. Just up it to Large Size and add a couple hit dice. I was thinking Zombies too, as the whole Rising from the dead thing that Jesus pulled off makes him technically a Zombie (I am not a master of theology, it's just my viewpoint, so I'd prefer if no one flames me for this or explains to me how my viewpoint is wrong). Also, maybe somthing to do with jelly beans (minature gelatenous cubes?). That's my 2cp, use it as you will. |
| malykoth04-14-06, 01:41 AM | How about the kython (from BoVD), but give them a Tiny-sized larval form that hatches out of brightly colored, festively patterened eggs...and maybe give them fuzzy little bunny ears as well. A demon (disguised as a cute, anthropomorphic bunny) is hopping around, hidding these eggs for the local children to find. Or... Have locals tell stories of otherwise harmless creatures going crazy, attacking humans. When the players investigate, they are attacked by a swarm of either ducks or rabbits. When the slain creatures are examined, it's apparent their insides have been replaced with a fluffy, gooey substance...a new slime that gets inside a creature and causes them to attack others. Or... Have rumors of a strange bush that produces colorful, tastey beans that grant the eater strange powers. Maybe a race ensues to be the first to find the potentially very valuable jelly-bean bush. Or some combination of the three... |
| pileobone04-14-06, 03:25 AM | Perhaps a mimic in the shape of a giant easter basket? |
| Archangel_James04-14-06, 05:10 PM | Thanks for your advice, friends. I've just finished the Peep Swarm and I'm about to begin the Chocolem (chocolate golem). Thanks for all your suggestions. I'm thinking the next two will be the Plastic Green Shambling Mound and the Easter Basket Mimic, but if someone has a real gem before I get to those, they might be bumped. Thanks again. Peep Swarm N Fine Confection* (swarm) Init +3; Senses low-light vision, darkvision 60 ft. Base Atk +7; Grp -- ___________________________________ Abilities Str 5, Dex 17, Con --, Int --, Wis 10, Cha 22 SQ construct traits, swarm traits Feats -- Skills -- ___________________________________ Crystalizing Sugar (Ex) Whenever a creature takes swarm damage, it is also covered in a sticky sugar substance that hardens 1d3 rounds later. A creature covered in the hardened sugar suffers a -1 penalty to attack rolls and a -4 penalty to dexterity. Also, the creature cannot drop what it was holding when the sugar hardened. Finally, spells cast with a somatic component have a 30% chance of failing. THe substance can only be removed by scrubbing with water (a full-round action). Distraction (Ex) Any living creature vulnerable to a peep swarm's damage that begins its turn with a swarm in its square is nauseated for 1 round; a DC 15 Fortitude save negates the effect. Even after a successful save, spellcasting or concentrating on spells within the area of a swarm requires a Concentration check (DC 20 + spell level). Using skills requiring patience and concentration require a DC 20 Concentration check. The save DC is Constitution-based. *Confection = Construct |
| Eclipse Lutgehr04-14-06, 05:54 PM | Possibly jump back to the old days of the Orc with the Pie adventure. Have the Egg in a giant vault whose "key" is the pedastal in front of it (Search check, followed by a Disable Device and Open Lock check to unlock the vault). On top of this pedastal is a steaming hot Shepard's Pie (Hamburger/Corn/Mashed Potatoes or Rice). The pie under an enchantment that makes all who veiw it want to eat it. As soon as the pie is removed/eaten, another one will appear upon the pedastal, and again they will be compelled to eat it (will save, cretures who are immune to mind-affecting or simply don't need to eat don't need to make this save. if the save is made, they don't need to eat the next pie. I'd say base the enchantment off of suggestion). After a pie is finished by a character, then next pies eaten will each do 1d6 damage (undecided type that bypasses all damage reduction) as they are finished due to the character's stomachs "hurting from being so full". After they have made all their saves (or are held in check by other characters so they don't eat any more), allow for the search/disable device/open lock checks. Once the vault door is open, have at least 2 Rabbit-shaped gargoyles attack the characters (reduce the CR for these golems as they're likly to have taken damage from the pies, I'd say around CR 4) as a last-ditch attempt to protect the egg. Hope that was any help, or at the very least Intelligable. |
| Archangel_James04-14-06, 06:43 PM | Ha! I like that pie idea. Simple and silly. I've finished the Chocolem, so I still need one more encounter for the forth egg. Maybe someone will have an idea while I type out this Chocolem. Chocolem N Large Confection* Init -1; Senses low-light vision, darkvision 60 ft. Languages none ___________________________________ AC 18, touch 8, flat-footed 18 hp 79 (9 HD); DR 5/adamantine; immunity to magic Fort +3, Ref +2, Will +3 ___________________________________ Speed 30 ft. Base Atk +6; Grp +15 Atk Options fudge breath ___________________________________ Abilities Str 21, Dex 9, Con --, Int --, Wis 11, Cha 1 SQ construct traits Feats -- Skills -- ___________________________________ Fudge Breath (Su) Once every 1d4 rounds, a Chocolem can exhale its creamy chocolate filling in a 20 ft. cone. Creatures caught in the blast must succeed on a DC 14 Reflex save or be stuck in place, unable to move, and suffer a -1 penalty on attack rolls and a -4 penalty to dexterity. Even on a successful save, the creature suffers -2 to dexterity and its movement is reduced by 5 ft. In any case, the chocolate drips off in 1d6 rounds. Immunity to Magic (Ex) A Chocolem is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. In addition, a magical attack that deals fire damage slows a Chocolem (as the slow spell) for 2d6 rounds, with no saving throw. *Confection = Construct |
| Shemeska the Marauder04-14-06, 08:25 PM | Roman soldiers and members of the Sanhedrin? Hey, they're part of Easter, just not the chocolate and bunnies version I suppose :) |
| Ront Iron-Roar04-14-06, 08:45 PM | How about rewarding the PCs with gift baskets full of magical items? |
| Archangel_James04-14-06, 10:09 PM | Well, since there are four PCs and four eggs, I was thinking of making the eggs turn out to be a bonus for each character. I was thinking Wish eggs--straight out of the PHB: only messing with the wish when it goes outside the spell description--but I'm not sure if those would be too much for a party of 7th level characters. In any case, does anyone have any ideas on what a giant crazy bunny might look like on paper, stats wise? I'm thinking flashy colourful spell-like abilities, but the prismatics are a bit too much for a party of such a level. Other than that, I'm thinking energy resistance so the psion doesn't one-hit him with energy missile. I'm also wrestling with subtype. Augmented animal? Magical beast? Abberation? Outsider? It's hard to say... |
| Bongitybongbong04-14-06, 10:41 PM | i'd make it a magical beast with high strength, charisma, and wisdom but lacking in dexterity and constitution; average intelligence. i can't think of many spell-likes so you'll have to think of them |
| Lord_Madrigan04-14-06, 10:55 PM | Have locals tell stories of otherwise harmless creatures going crazy, attacking humans. When the players investigate, they are attacked by a swarm of either ducks or rabbits.... Images of the Killer Bunny from monty python are entering into my Brain. If you want to go tigh the whole candy and easter egg theme... Willy Wonkas Chocolate Factory Of Doom  |
| malykoth04-14-06, 10:58 PM | How about a big, sentient, malicious easter bonnet. It takes over the mind of whoever puts it on, which allows it to use its other powers (as you see fit to assign...telepathic domination? Broadcasting strict instructions to act proper, sit still, and for no one to mess up their clothes? Meh...maybe just a death beam). Now imagine a town full of harmless, innocent women...ALL of them wearing easter bonnets. Which one is the boss? Maybe more than one? Who knows! |
