there are a few example's but it's not like in 3.5
in the templates it say chalenge rating +2

Is this like the ecl in 3.5???

So a half celestial human
who is a lvl 1 fighter would have

1 hd
1 class lvl
and would be a 2nd level character

Right?

if so why does it increase from +1 to +4 in 3.5??

Please help i'm going to bash my dm's skull in for thinking he uses the rules correctly...

We have a half dragon cleric that has only an ecl +2

And i'm eyeballing the satyr that would make a 5hd (or 5hd +2 ecl in 3.5)

Help me please...

03-13-04, 07:21 AM First off, Challenge Rating has no bearing on the total ECL. Ignore the part of the template that says +X to CR, thats for a DM's monster not for a PC's character.
The only difference between ECL in 3.0 and 3.5 is that 3.5 defines a seperate Level Adjustment that is added to the racial HD of a monster, for example, the Satyr has 5 fey HD, and is listed with a Level Adjustment of +2. Adding them gives a total ECL of 7, so a 3.5 satyr is the equivalent of a 7th level character.
3.0 doesnt use the LA system, but the same things determine what its level adjustment is.
The ECL of a monster is not listed anywhere in the 3.0 MM, not even in templates. You have to look in the 3.0 DMG, and find under the Monsters as Races section (I think its in the Characters chapter). This section lists the various ECLs of creatures, which in some cases are a little off.
For example, in that table Half-Celestials are given an ECL of 3. That means a Half celestial human with 1 level of a fighter is a 4th level character, with 1HD given from the fighter level, and none from the template.
Half dragons are also given an ECL of 3, so are also 4th level characters with 1HD if they have 1 character class level.
In the same chapter with the NPC stats, it shows the + to CR for differnt NPC races, each +1CR for drow. IGNORE THIS FOR CHARACTERS. An old DM of mine got just as confused as you when he first started using ECL. Just be sure only to use the numbers specificly listed in the table in the Monsters as Races section.
