Ok, I'm still a bit confused by a number of things. My DM is starting a campaign in which characters start out at 8th level. I want to play a Doppleganger. Dopplegangers start out with 4 racial hit die and have a level adjustment of +4. So right off the bat, I have 8 ECL. Do I start with 1 character level (and thus an ECL of 9) or do I start with no character levels, just my racial hit die, until I get enough experience to reach level 9, at which point I would get my 1st character level?

If my question still isn't clear, I'll clarify.

If the party is all 8th level then:

"start with no character levels, just my racial hit die"

You are considered to have enough experience to be 8th level and require the difference between 8th and 9th level to become a 1st level (PC classed character).
