These are the “elemental” subtypes as presented in the 3.5 SRD:
From 3.5 SRD
Element Subtype

Air Subtype: This subtype usually is used for elementals and outsiders with a connection to the Elemental Plane Air. Air creatures always have fly speeds and usually have perfect maneuverability.

Earth Subtype: This subtype usually is used for elementals and outsiders with a connection to the Elemental Plane of Earth. Earth creatures usually have burrow speeds, and most earth creatures can burrow through solid rock.

Water Subtype: This subtype usually is used for elementals and outsiders with a connection to the Elemental Plane of Water. Creatures with the water subtype always have swim speeds and can move in water without making Swim checks. A water creature can breathe underwater and usually can breathe air as well.

Elemental Energy Subtype

Cold Subtype: A creature with the cold subtype has immunity to cold. It has vulnerability to fire, which means it takes half again as much (+50%) damage as normal from fire, regardless of whether a saving throw is allowed, or if the save is a success or failure.

Fire Subtype: A creature with the fire subtype has immunity to fire. It has vulnerability to cold, which means it takes half again as much (+50%) damage as normal from cold, regardless of whether a saving throw is allowed, or if the save is a success or failure.

It looks like, what I call, the Element Subtype grants the creature the movement mode associated with the element & the Elemental Energy Subtype grants immunity/weakness to the appropriate associated energies. I have few questions about this schema:

1) Is there a movement mode appropriate to the Element Subtype fire?
(I know that the Element Subtype and the Elemental Energy Subtype fire have the same name unlike Earth > Acid for example)

2) Why no Electricity or Acid Elemental Energy Subtypes ?

3) Do these subtypes in any way grant the base creature the ability to survive on the associated Elemental Plane?

Thanks,
Necro

2) Electricity is air and acid is earth.

You completely missed any of my questions. Let me try and re-clarify. Here are the elements and their associated energies to set the record straight:

Element....................Allied Energy
Air............................Electrici ty
Earth........................Acid
Fire...........................Fire
Water.......................Cold

As I have quoted above there are subtypes for the Elements Air, Earth, & Water; and there are subtypes for the Allied Energies Cold and Fire. My questions are:

1) Is there a movement mode appropriate for an Element subtype fire? (Not allied energy subtype fire)

2) Why no Electricity or Acid allied energy subtypes?

3) Do any of the Element Subtypes or the Allied Energy Subtypes in any way grant the base creature the ability to survive on the associated Elemental Plane?

Thanks,
Necro

To understand what it is I am asking you need to first see the distinction between Element Subtypes and Allied Energy Subtypes. (Yes they are different)

Well, concerning the Element Subtypes:

The Earth, Air, and Water element subtypes all pretty much only affect that creatures movement (though Water adds water breathing to that). Earth = Burrowing, Air = Flight, Water = Swimming.

Well, the Fire element has no associated movement. In mean you can move through fire no problem (assuming your immune to fire, or really resistant, that is ;).)

Now, the Elemental Energy Subtype of Fire covers creatures of fire. Since the Element Subtypes have the common theme of "Special Movements," Fire, doesn't fit. However, it does fit as an Elemental Energy Subtype--immune to itself, vulnerable to its opposite.

Concerning the Elemental Energy subtypes:

Not sure why their are no Acid or Electricity subtypes. Having them on creatures could be feasible, and could represent the opposition of the two in games. But overall, it's probably a small issue.

And don't forget about Sonic energy. If Acid and Electricity were to get them, the poor Sonic energy would be left all alone as purely special damage.

These are purely my own opinions on the issue (nothing official told by a designer), but I hope this helps some.

Then poor force would be all alone :(

Can someone tell me if a half Gold Dragon is a fire type or if it takes double damage from Cold? If so where can I find the rules on it. I figured it was inherent in the Half Dragon being able to breath fire and its immunity.

Yes, a half Gold Dragon has the [Fire] subtype and hence is immune to fire and takes +50% damage on cold based attacks.
