Treasure None Alignment Always chaotic evil Advancement 17-26 HD (Huge), 27-40 HD (Gargantuan), 41-48 HD (Colossal) Level Adjustment -- An enormous mass of red-orange flame billows towards you. As portions of it seem to reach toward you like pseudopods, you would swear you can see two red eyes deep within, and the roaring of the fire sounds--angry. Hellflames are vicious and powerful creatures, born from a band of unhappy fire elementals who were trapped deep in the Abyss. Over the eons the elementals underwent a transformation, changing from relatively neutral beings of fire to cruel, sadistic creatures that thrive on mortal agony. Hellflames resemble nothing so much as enormous masses of fire, perhaps with a reddish tint--but they move with evil purpose, and can do things no normal fire could. Hellflames speak Abyssal and Ignan. Combat: A hellflame enjoys combat, preferring to cut off lone victims so it can reveal its true nature to them, increasing their terror. Against multiple foes a hellflame lashes out with multiple pseudopods, alternating with its potent supernatural abilities. Augmented Critical (Ex): A hellflame deals triple damage on a critical, rather than double. In addition, the hellflame's slam attack functions as a flaming burst weapon, dealing an additional 2d10 points of fire damage on a critical. Burn (Ex): Anyone struck by a hellflame's slam attack must make a Reflex save (DC 25) or catch on fire, burning for 1d6 rounds. Ignited creatures take 1d6 points of fire damage per round. This ability has no effect on creatures that cannot logically be ignited (such as a stone golem or an ooze). The save DC is Constitution-based. Engulf (Ex): As a standard action, a hellflame may surround a single opponent of size Medium or less. This provokes an attack of opportunity from the victim. The victim thereafter takes double damage from the hellflame's heat aura (2d6) and is considered flanked by the hellflame, which gains a +2 bonus to attack rolls on the victim. Any attempts by the victim to depart the area provoke an attack of opportunity from the hellflame. Characters may use the Tumble skill to escape; this counts as tumbling through an occupied square (DC 25). Fire Healing (Su): As beings of elemental fire, hellflames are healed by fire and heat effects. A hellflame is healed of 1 point of damage for every 3 points the fire would normally inflict. Hit point above the hellflame's normal maximum are retained for one hour as temporary hit points. Heat Aura (Su): Anyone approaching within 30' of a hellflame takes 1d6 points of fire damage per round due to the intense heat produced by the monster. Smoke Cloud (Su): As a standard action a hellflame may produce a quantity of smoke centered anywhere within 30' of the hellflame. This cloud of smoke is equal to an obscuring mist spell (caster level 16); additionally, all creatures within it immediately begin to suffocate. Hellflames are immune to this effect, and can see clearly through the smoke cloud. Spell-like Abilities: 3/day--heat metal; 1/day--delayed blast fireball, fireball, wall of fire. Caster level 16th; save DC 13+spell level. The save DCs are Charisma-based. |
