tauaru 01-29-07, 09:45 PM	In the MMII the Needlefolk "hate elves passionately." Does anyone know why? It seems an odd hatred for a species of sentient plant. Does this come from any kind of backstory? I could make up any number of reasons, but it seems odd to list that a creature hates a particular race without saying why.
speeblefreak 01-29-07, 10:47 PM	First possibility that comes to mind is that the needlefolk think elves are hypocrites for claiming to love nature but only paying attention to forests and trees.
Slagger the Chuul 01-29-07, 11:22 PM	We also don't hear why a normal ghoul's paralysis doesn't affect elves, or why bulettes refuse to eat them. We also have hobgoblins and sahuagin who hate land-based elves and aquatic elves respectively, again without any real reason being given. Funnily enough, the Monster Manual doesn't bother to say that orcs hate elves; I guess by this point it's assumed knowledge. :)

The humans cried to the gods for help, and some trickster deity, probably Ralishaz, took "pity", and changed them into needlemen. And that is the origin of needlefolk, paraphrased from 2e.
