Hi!

When there is a monk/githzerai (they have leveladjustment 2) who is 1 level monk (he has only 1 hitdie) and he is hit by a wight which bestows one negative level is he slain? Or can he take 3 negative levels before being slain?

Thanks

The monk is dead. HD count, not ECL.

Refer to DMG, pg 293: "A character with negative levels at least equal to her current level, or drained below 1st level, is instantly slain."

What level is the monk above? He's 1st level. His level adjustment is not factored into the number of skill points or feats he gains. For proof of this, refer to the githzerai warrior on pg 129 of the Monster Manual and count the skill points. He has an 8 Intelligence and thus gets four ranks (not eight), all of which were spent to purchase two cross-class ranks in Spot.

(I'm not sure why they list Concentration, since the listed character has spent no points on it.)

So the warrior on that page is clearly 1st level, not 3rd. For further proof, he only has one feat, not two. Since he's a 1st level character, he is killed when he acquires one negative level.

The monk you refer to is no different than the warrior in terms of level adjustment, as that's determined by race. Therefore, one negative level is all it takes to kill the monk as well.
