It lives on walls, floors, creatures, and items that are at least somewhat porous. It looks like a black or dark brown stain. The Fungus spreads by releasing spores into its area almost constantly throughout its life cycle. Infest Porous Item or Surface: Whenever a creature comes into contact with these spores it must make a Fortitude save (DC 5) or become infected by patches of the blacklung fungus that grow on the characters skin. There is a greater danger though, any porous equiptment becomes infested. Bedrolls, belt pouches, leather armor, belt pouches, boots, and backpacks all provide a place for the fungus to grow unchecked. The infested items start to darken as the fungus grows into a full colony, after about twenty four hours (Spot DC 10). After a full colony takes hold of a piece of equiptment all of the characters other porous items become infected within another twenty four hours (impossible not to notice, dark black stains on items). Any other items that come into contact with infected goods also become infected. Walls, ropes, foodstuffs, and any other porous surface are elegible for infestation. Every day the character remains in contact with infected items, he or she is dealt two point of Constitution damage as the spores from the fungus slowly start to fill the characters lungs. If the character reaches 0 Constitution, he or she dies from suffocation. Vulnerable to Fire and Alchemical Cleansers: The only way to rid oneself of the fungus is to burn the infected items or to treat with an alchemical cleaning solution (alchemy DC 10 to create). All items on an infected character and possibly any companions must be thouroughly cleaned and soaked to remove all traces of the fungus. Resistant to Physical Harm: This creature is a fungus. It can not be killed by physical attack, or scraped off, due to the fact of its microscopic nature. You could never get it all. Spells and the like are also not helpful because each patch of blacklung fungus is made up of thousands of microscopic colonies. It could be destroyed by any spell that also destroys all of the infected equiptment. |
| Willie the Duck09-03-03, 03:06 PM | an interesting idea, but not really a monster so much as an altered disease. Also, it would be vulnerable to cure disease spells (other infestation creatures always have). |
| fade_1309-03-03, 03:58 PM | cure disease wouldnt work.....it only works on the creature touched, and i dont think that applies to equipment carried. also, remove disease doesnt work on all diseases anyway..... As far as blacklung fungus not being a "monster".......define monster. It is a living creature, it may not be run of the mill, but its still a being. It may have effects like a disease.....but it also has a physical presence much unlike diseases. if the fungus lived only in a host creature, it would be easy to get rid of with cure disease. but since it has a physical manifestation, form and space, it becomes more creaturelike. |
| Ob_Deamon09-03-03, 05:17 PM | Ummm... in regards to the fungus's monster status: its a hazard. Take a look at the green slime. This thing is most definatly a hazard. |
| fade_1309-03-03, 05:28 PM | ok.....i agree that it is sorta like green slime and the mold listed under pg 76 dmg.......but does that make those items not creatures? they are listed under dungeon animals....subheading slimes molds and fungi......i will just have to ask a moderator or something........ even if you dont like it for the contest you should try it out sometime.......there is nothing funner than having your pc's running for the nearest town to try and get the stuff off em....lol |
| TheMudhead09-03-03, 07:08 PM | I like this idea but you should rethink some of this. Prestidigitation (0 level) allows someone to clean items in a 1-foot cube each round and lasts an hour.... would that work? |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.09-03-03, 07:10 PM | My main objection to it being a monster is the lack of any ability scores. Even the lowly shrieker has some abilities. To quote the PHB page 9: Every Creature has a wisdom score and Every creature has a charisma score Furthermore your statement that it is a living being is questionable since it lacks a constitution score.:teach: |
| fade_1309-03-03, 07:21 PM | dudes........first off....prestidigitation might work.....thats up to the dm..... secondly....how important are abilities for a creature such as this? they arent....... i think that creatures such as this one and green slime and the molds fall into a special catagory....they used to in previous editions......why not now? and really.......who cares? this contest is for FUN......this is a fun creature that i have ran in my own game for years and years......and it made for a evenings play...........my players arent rules lawyers..... i will give it some scores though......i guess i do have to make it 3.5 legal in all aspects |
