Its tiny, pupil-less eyes seem empty and dead, but they swivel almost imperceptibly to regard you. The huge, rust colored fish's body is almost all mouth, with wicked teeth of varied lengths. The light changes, pulsing with radiance, and something pulls at the back of your mind as the Gloomlight Angler glides towards you through the water, bringing with it its horrid, gaping maw... In the depths of the sea swim ancient fish, beacons of evil in an already inhospitable realm. The Gloomlight Anglers use their lures to produce light, something which is irresistible to the denizens of a perpetually dark environment. Once the source of the light is reached, however, victims generally find homes for themselves in the Gloomlight's gullet. Gloomlight Anglers are hardy survivalists, possessed of a cold cunning and a cynical disregard for other life. Scholars debate as to the origin of the Gloomlight Angler, but most agree that the species is quite ancient, and some theorize that they may have come from the same stock that spawned the Aboleths. Regardless of the validity of this claim, Gloomlights do have an inborn hatred for the Aboleths, despite the fact that their deep ocean habitats are usually removed from the Aboleths' underground rivers and lakes. Examined carefully, Gloomlight Anglers appear both awkward and horrific. Females frequently reach lengths of thirty feet, and aside from their stubby tail fins, their reddish bodies are built like misshapen spheres. (Males are similar, but significantly smaller.) This appearance is deceptive, however, and Gloomlights have no difficulty in silently maneuvering through their deep sea environs. Gloomlight bodies are almost all stomach and mouth, with lower jaws that extend several feet in front of the body. Stalks of approximately five feet rise and droop forward from the fishes' foreheads. At the end of these stalks, the Gloomlights' light-producing lures are secured. Gloomlight Anglers speak their own language and Aquan. This ability is inborn, not taught; Gloomlights rarely speak to each other, even before mating. When they do choose to converse, their voices are croaking and resonant. Combat Gloomlight Anglers typically float throughout the deep sea with lures lit, waiting for unlucky creatures to happen upon their light. At this point, they generally use their suggestion to ask that the prey come closer before swallowing it. Against more wily opponents, they camouflage themselves and sneak up on their enemies with lures off before activating their Gloomlight. Gloomlight (Su): While Gloomlight Anglers are perfectly able to see in the dark, they use their lures to produce light and attract prey. Gloomlights have excellent control of this ability, and the light can extend anywhere from a radius of five to one hundred and twenty feet away from the fish's body, as per their choosing. The Gloomlight may adjust the radius of the light or shut it off completely once per round as a free action. The light produced is inherently evil, seeping away the spirit of Gloomlight victims, especially those of a good nature. All good creatures within the light's radius suffer a -2 morale penalty to all checks, skills, and attacks. Gloomlight is transfixing and alluring. Any creature within two hundred feet of the fish that so much as sees the light must succeed at a Will save (DC 19) or immediately come under the effects of a suggestion, as per the spell. Those that succeed are immune to this aspect of the Gloomlight for one day. (The Gloomlight Angler need not be able to communicate with the creature in question to make its suggestion understood.) Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a Gloomlight Angler must hit with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can try to swallow the foe in the following round. Swallow Whole (Ex): The Gloomlight's gigantic mouth and elastic stomach take up most of the space in its body, allowing it to consume far more than its body size would suggest. A Gloomlight Angler can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of up to its own size by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 2d6+6 points of bludgeoning damage plus 1d8+4 points of acid damage per round from the Gloomlight's digestive juices. A swallowed creature can cut its way out using a light slashing or piercing weapon by dealing 25 points of damage to the Gloomlight's digestive tract (AC 13). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. A Gloomlight Angler's gullet can hold 1 Huge, 4 Large, 16 Medium or Small, 64 Tiny, 256 Diminutive, or 1024 Fine or smaller opponents. Skills: Gloomlight Anglers can change their skin color to match that of surrounding water, making them incredibly difficult to spot when they so choose. As long as their lure is not lit, they receive a +20 racial bonus on hide checks. |
