| master griffon04-03-05, 01:12 PM | I was wondering if someone might be able to answer this for me? In a game I was fighting a ettin alone and I took out one head if it, would the other head still be able to fight using the other side, or would the side if the killed head be limp? |
| Count Arioch the 28th04-03-05, 01:16 PM | You know, that's a really good question, I don't think that's answered anywhere else. I know that if you have a vorpal sword, you'll need to cut off both heads to kill the thing, but I'm not sure what happens when one ehad is severed. I think it would be reasonable to take away the ability to use both weapons without a penalty, maybe taking it down to the Two Weapon fighting feat alone (One extra attack, all attacks at -4 for being armed with a medium weapon in the off hand.) |
| mathx31404-03-05, 01:57 PM | If it can survive with only one head after a Vorpal attack, then why would it not survive with one head after a regular one? It really ought to still be able to live. |
| master griffon04-03-05, 02:55 PM | I was asking if the ettin would still have the use of the full body? |
| mathx31404-03-05, 02:57 PM | Ah. As DM, I'd rule that it would only have use of one side of the body. But that's up to you. |
| Slagger the Chuul04-04-05, 04:35 AM | I'd favour Count Arioch's suggestion (which I also thought of on just the first post), since it's simple and doesn't involve any real mucking around with the stats. If you want to have it partially disabled, I suggest also removing the use of the arm on that side. For something different, you could instead treat the creature as staggered, with its one remaining brain struggling to control the body on its own (this would be in addition to disabling Superior Two-Weapon Fighting). |
| Darkmeer04-04-05, 01:34 PM | Spoiler for those whose DM's use Dungeon magazine: In a recent Dungeon (moved recently, so I don't have a number handy), an ettin had a good and evil half, the evil half beat the good half into unconsciousness, and used the whole body. [/spoiler] Personally, I think that is the way to go. If it's missing a head, allow the other to function normally, just don't use their perfect two weapon fighting abilities. :twocents: |
| master griffon04-05-05, 01:42 PM | I was hoping for somemore feed back on the qeustion about the ettin? |
| Boothbey04-05-05, 11:18 PM | I'd say the ettin would be fine fighting with the whole body once the bothersome second head was removed. Now for the ick idea I got reading this thread...Imagine an ettin where one of the heads has been turned into an undead. EWWWWwww...I want to use that idea in my next game. hehe |
| primemover00304-06-05, 01:53 AM | The only thing I'd lose is the Superior TWF... it needs the other head to maintain the seperate targeting... I'd also lose the bonus to spot, search, and listen. |
| Antioch04-06-05, 03:26 AM | I'm in favor of simply negating its superior two-weapon fighting feature, though I'd take it one step further and remove its racial bonuses as well. |
| tender branson04-06-05, 03:46 AM | losing a head is pretty shocking to the body, i'd assume, no matter how many spare heads it's got. |
