Even the errata is wrong?!? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-06-07, 08:28 PM I was just reviewing the articles on the site and for the new Drow of the Underdark book and there was some errata posted for the Vril. Under special qualities it lists its 'shriek' ability. Am I missing something or does the damage not add up right?

If the creature starts out with this ability and it increases 1d6 at 3rd level and every three levels thereafter shouldn't it be = 1st level 1d6, 3rd level 2d6, 6th level 3d6, 9th level 4d6 - assuming the damage is maxed at 4d6? Therefore there would be no damage increase at 12th level? If I'm right, and the errata is wrong, I would hate to think what the proofreading is like in the original book!

I have pasted the original entry for the readers so that they can see what I'm on about.

"Shriek (Ex) Once per day as a standard action, a vril can emit a horrible shriek, either as a 15-foot-radius burst centered on itself or as a 30-foot cone. Any creature in the affected area takes 1d6 points of sonic damage. A successful Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 the vril’s character level + the vril’s Con modifier) reduces the damage by half. A vril barbarian can use its shriek when raging.
The shriek’s damage increases by 1d6 at 3rd level and every three levels thereafter (2d6 at 6th, 3d6 at 9th, and so on), up to a maximum of 4d6 points of sonic damage at 12th level."

05-07-07, 06:26 AM "and so on" is indeed very useless to say, because there is just one last increase at level 12. Aside that, I don't see a problem there.

It was probably just crappy wording, but I believe the intent is correct.:)

05-07-07, 12:14 PM If we take the text literally, the damage increases by 1d6 every 3 levels. Thus damage should be:
1st: 1d6
3rd: 2d6
6th: 3d6
9th: 4d6
12th: 5d6

If the damage increase is cumulative (i.e., +1d6 at 3rd, +2d6 at 6th, +3d6 at 9th), the damage progression should be:

1st: 1d6
3rd: 2d6 (+1d6)
6th: 4d6 (+2d6)
9th: 7d6 (+3d6)
12th: 11d6 (+4d6)

This second progression works if the phrase "up to a maximum of 4d6 points...at 12th level" means "a maximum increase of 4d6. Not a total maximum of 4d6, but a maximum increase.

This also means that damage increases beyond 12th level, thusly:

15th: 15d6 (+4d6)
18th: 19d6 (+4d6)

If we ignore the parenthetical text and the maximum, the 1d6 + 1d6/3 levels matches the example vril warrior (3 HD, 2d6 shriek). However, the parenthetical text should read "2d6 at 3rd, 3d6 at 6th, 4d6 at 9th" rather than the current confusing contents. It's also unclear whether it maxes at 4d6 at 9th or 1d6+4d6 at 12th.
