Evil outsiders superficially resembling clowns? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I think I saw some monster in some MM or the like that looked kinda like clowns (look like made-up clowns, but don't need to wear makeup), but are really outsiders from Pandæmonium or something like that. Does anyone remember where they're from (what book, not what plane)? Or is it just my memory playing tricks on me?

That would be the paeliryon devil - FF, page 58. A 20'-tall, CR 22 clownlike horror.

Ah. Thanks. That must be what I was thinking of (although I misremembered a few things, like thinking they were CE and such).

The first time I ever saw that picture I was over here going 'WTC?!?!'.

By an odd coincidence that is still my reaction each time.

*gives Wizards a really odd look*

The toothy fat bat courtesan? I knew devils had peculiar taste and all, but never thought they'd go for clowns.

What about the Gray Jester from Heroes of Horror? He dances, juggles, does other clown things like soul eating. What a riot, that guy.

...I now have the horrible urge to run a clown-themed adventure...dig up every vaguely clown-like monster I can find and throw them at the party in one nightmarish orgy of clown-induced terror...

...This is your fault, all of you! You people are sick! Sick, sick, sick!

Or maybe that was it... I don't know. My memories are rather vague.

What if there were a clown-like celestial outsider of pure goodness, justice, and compassion?

What if there were a clown-like celestial outsider of pure goodness, justice, and compassion?Noone would ever really trust him, despite his good nature. ;)

Wow.... I just got an idea for a punishment demi plane in the form of a carnavile. Weve got jugglers, and there is that undead bard ghost in libris mortis that would work great (With levles in Dirge Singer so that he/she can properly tormment the spirits). Obviously the paeliryon devil would be running the show as the big boss..... what others could round out the cast for such a circus of horrors? The carinval goers could all be evil specters.... perhapes the souls of dead clowns.......... Mabey a Farspawn-Lion tammer? Chokers on the Trapize? Ghasts on consessions? A tourtured Deva as the side show? Ghasts hosting an eating contest?

A Paeliryon sings with a backup chorus of Lemures, vendors sell fiendish symbiotes like peanuts, horrid elephants carry blood war captives in cages of fire, Kytons do acrobatics with chains, the Astounding Mind Flayer does a magic act where he makes independent thought disappear, and Kluchir Knieval attempts to jump 20 mortals with a steamroller. Oh, and there are no willing attendants. Only prisoners.

A Paeliryon sings with a backup chorus of Lemures, Hmm, I like where your giong, but you seem to be a little heavy on the devils. A circus full only of devils is kinda like a cirus where all the performers are canadian. We need variety in the horrors! :} vendors sell fiendish symbiotes like peanuts, Or perhapes symbiots that LOOK like peanuts? Oh, and a vargoulle kissing booth. horrid elephants carry blood war captives in cages of fire, Excellent, im thinking of sending a 9th level party of 6 in here. Bloodwar captives might be additional allies aside from the deva. They will probably need all the help than can get. Kytons do acrobatics with chains, the Astounding Mind Flayer does a magic act where he makes independent thought disappear, and Kluchir Knieval attempts to jump 20 mortals with a steamroller. Hmm, dont know about the mind flayer... not really alot of fun to tourcher people if they cant really controll there screaming.... Mabey just controll one person in the audience and have everyone watch as they murder there friends and mutilate themselves in unspeakable ways.... then start picking new volunteers one at a time.... yes that could work. Oh, and there are no willing attendants. Only prisoners.
Obviously :}

I like the way you think.

Anyone have any suggestions for some nice fire breathers? Aside from the dragons...

No no; make it an updated 2e nymph (evil, of course). Each time she removes a veil, you have to pay a copper to stay in the tent. If you make it to the end - Fortitude save!

Maybe the Amazing Werewolfo and his Performing Yeth Hounds?

The Mirror-Maze full of Invisible Stalkers?

The night hag Gypsy Fortune-Teller?

And the worst horror of all...one so awful I have to put it in sblocks...
The Pit of Kender!

I should mention that you can create your own monsters if you wish. A Tasha's Hideous Laughter based monster with other circus themed abilities would not be a failure.
Also keep in mind that the appearance of creatures is only a suggestion of what they might look like. I've had half-fiends that looked like angels having golden hair, large white wings, and a merciless stare of death that looks through people's souls. My players thought they were being targeted by heaven for some reason.

Fire breathers? Fire mephits, obviously. But deranged humans, maybe human binders of Amon, would work just as well. In fact... a tiefling barbarian 6 / Disciple of Mephistopheles 3 / Binder 1 may be a level higher than your party you've got in mind but, it would be a perfect thematic fit.

You could have the player characters go up against a Famine Spirit (Monster Manual II, page 97) in an eating contest.
