| The Vorpal Tribble01-31-05, 03:16 PM | Heres a thread to put all your extinct creatures, be they dinosaur, dodo or proto-elephants (and hopefully have them critiqued). -- Tanystropheus http://users.unimi.it/vertpal/galleriafossili/best-rettili/tanystropheus/morffunzionale/combattimento-p.jpg The waves crash nearby, and seagulls lift off suddenly with a squawk. A reptilian head pokes itself out of the water and juts out onto the shore. It appears as a stiff-bodied snake until a long body comes along. Turning, it hisses and suddenly the head snaps up twelve feet high. It scurries towards you, jaws gaping far overhead... Large Animal Hit Dice: 4d8+12 (28 hp) Initiative: +8 Speed: 30 ft. (6 squares), swim 30 feet AC: 18 (-1 size, +4 dex, +5 natural), touch 13, flat-footed 14 BAB/Grapple: +3/+10 Attack: Bite +6 melee (1d8+3) Full attack: Bite +6 melee (1d8+3) or 2 claws +5 melee (1d6+3) Space/Reach: 10 ft./10 ft. Its lowly held, long body nearly, or in fact does, drag along the ground in places, supported by two stubby front legs, and two longer, bent back legs. Each foot ends in five toes with curved claws. The tail is very long, and used as a counter balance for the neck. Combat: Tanystropheus prefers smaller creatures to feed upon, mostly large fish and birds, though it can be highly territorial, attacking in earnest any creatures that trespasses. It strikes with blindingly quick downward snaps of its neck, grabbing and tearing with its teeth. If the foe comes too close it'll rear up onto its back legs and slash with its front claws. If an opponent proves too much, it will flee into any nearby water. Skills: A tanefee gets a +4 bonus on all spot, listen, and swim checks. |
| Ogre4Hire02-01-05, 12:03 PM | Claw attacks don't really make much sense for this guy, I'd recommend dropping them. And as a large animal, its space should only be 10, rather than 20. Finally, just to make it a little more interesting, consider Combat Reflexes rather than Lightning Reflexes. |
| The Vorpal Tribble02-01-05, 01:09 PM | Claw attacks make sense because it has claws and whats it supposed to do for close-up combat with that neck? Also it 'does' take up 20 feet of space, but considering its very thin its barely even Large. Definetely not Huge. Think of a very long plastic pipe. Takes up tons of space but can lift it with one hand. Its not a very large object at all, just takes up space. |
| fiskpaj02-02-05, 07:14 AM | Maybe the reach is 30 ft, and the space is 10? |

They used their claws as guidence while swimming, their bodies were not designed to be able to attack with their claws. Doing so would probably break their already fragile neck. I would say they had a neck and tail attack. Well sorry but your changing the game mechanics for this one monster, so no it takes up either 10' and is large, or it takes up 20' and is huge. I would say it is a large creature with 20' reach. |

| The Vorpal Tribble02-02-05, 01:29 PM | Ah, so a twenty foot piece of rigid wire would be a gargantuan object, eh? Excuse me, but that makes no sense. |
| Ilium02-02-05, 01:49 PM | Ah, so a twenty foot piece of rigid wire would be a gargantuan object, eh? Excuse me, but that makes no sense. No, if you are holding a twenty-foot rigid wire, you are a Medium creature with a 20 ft reach. I think people are just saying that as a Large creature you should give it a 10 ft. space, but assume that its neck and head stick out of that space giving it a big reach. Although it is obviously a part of the creature, you can treat the head and neck as a reach weapon and only worry about the body for Space purposes. Other creatures can share space with the neck. |
| The Vorpal Tribble02-02-05, 02:40 PM | Now that makes sense. |
| Ever Lonely Ty02-03-05, 09:03 PM | Someone should od Compsognathus now! I would, but I suck at making monsters. |
| Ogre4Hire02-04-05, 12:34 PM | They made one in Dragon Magazine for last year's April Issue (Ninjas, Pirates, and Dinosaurs; same place as CV got stats for the Ninja.) |
| Arae'Kol Da'Ato02-15-05, 08:56 PM | Pygmy Elephants just use War Pony stats except Speed 20 feet Dexterity 11 Constitution 16 and Strength 17 higher NA along with a hoof attack 1d6 I think............. Damn it!!!!!!:banghead::rant::banghead: All the good Ice Age creatures were taken in the MM, FF or Frostburn. |

| savant_warlord1311-11-05, 09:19 PM | The constitution seems a bit high here, after all, they look pretty frail |
| rampant11-11-05, 10:45 PM | penalty to save against vorpal |
| savant_warlord1311-12-05, 11:45 AM | good idea, rampant, although I'm not sure how that would work... |

| Ront Iron-Roar11-12-05, 04:44 PM | What about Sea Scorpions? Trilobites? Ammonites? Of course, some of them need to be enlarged. A giant ammonite latching onto someone would be scary. What about Andrewsarchus? Big predatory hyena thing related to goats. Marsupial Lions? Or Terratorns. |

| The Vorpal Tribble11-12-05, 07:29 PM | Yet another critter I need to update... The constitution seems a bit high here, after all, they look pretty frail I'm not sure how they look frail considering their bodies, though elongegated, was at least as powerful as a crocodile's. Crocodiles have a higher score. Even dogs have a Con of 15. What about Sea Scorpions? Trilobites? Ammonites? Of course, some of them need to be enlarged. A giant ammonite latching onto someone would be scary. What about Andrewsarchus? Big predatory hyena thing related to goats. I have already done a sea scorpion, trilobite, and andrewsarchus (Riverbeast in my Creation Page). Tribbs already did Andrewsarchus!! Read his creations page before posting here! Savant, chill. |
| The Vorpal Tribble11-12-05, 07:43 PM | There, that should be all balanced and done. |
| Ront Iron-Roar11-13-05, 12:43 AM | Yeah, I just took a look at this page briefly before I had to get off. So no need to be hyper-critical. But, anywho off to making creatures from that Alien Planet thing. |
