Many creatures already have a decent number of racial hitdie. If you want to make a giant wizard, he's going to either have ungodly number of hitpoints, great saves, epic feats, and so on to be a good wizard, or he's going to be a terrible wizard, mediocre fighter, with reazonable hitpoints and saves (because to be a good wizard at high level you need to give him at least 14 levels, which cumulative to the racial hitdie for a monsterous epic beast, or the alternative is trying to make him have the appropriate saves and so on for his level but end up skimping on the wizard levels, which makes it pointless). SO here's my solution. Gestalt the dang things. This variant is too nice for player characters, in my oppinion, but for creatures we have an eligant solution for a creature with resonable saves, hitpoints stacked with actual casting/fighting/roguish ability. It's a beautiful way to make a creature different and tougher without blowing his hp and saves way out of proportion. So, is this a good idea? What sort of CR adjustment would you give a creature, if he's not actually gaining hitpoints and such, just ability? I'll post one of my meaner creations later tonight, I think. I'm gestalting psion onto an illithid :smirk: . I'm also thinking of making a policing class of mind flayers, who have levels of illithid slayer (what better class to control their own kind then a class designed to kill their own kind {also, +1 manifester level at each level with full attack bonus progression, ick}). |

However, i think that you should never give it more extra levels than it has racial HD. As for the CR calculation, you should not add CR calculation. Since gestalt requires 50% additional XP to gain, i think that when you fill a monster's HD with gestalt levels, the monster would simply be worth 150% of normal Xp, but the CR would not change (Since you are effectively only advancing it) If you do not fully Getalt it, increase the granted XP %-wise. Great idea dude. I'm using it. |

If they're really good then have your fight be able to only hit 10% of the time and they can use flanking and assist. Spending an hour or two working on a creature with specific stats may work for you now, but if you try to pull it out again, you'll likely be dealing with Pcs with different stats. Example: Best fighter Attack: +25 Easy: Creature Ac: 30 (hits on 5 or better) Moderate: Creature AC:35 (hits on 10 or better) Hard: Creature AC: 40 (hits on 15 or better) Very hard: Creature AC: 45 (hits on natural 20, players must use tactics to hit) You can do that with saves for caster attacks. Also keep the attack bonus to a similar standard. |
