| The Vorpal Tribble04-22-06, 09:46 PM | Just out of curiosity as I can't find it, is there any list out there that mentions the locations of creatures from outside the material plane? I know there are lists of monsters by terrains, such as swamp creatures and desert dwellers and forest swingers, but what about Gehennans? Limbons? Astralians? Never seen anything like that. |
| Shemeska the Marauder04-23-06, 12:29 AM | The back of the Planar Handbook has a listing of critters in each plane, except it's flawed in that it's a list of potential encounters in each plane sorted by CR, rather than an actual listing of true natives of the plane in question. The best listings* come from the encounter listings in the Planescape Monstrous Compendium I, II, and III. Though these only include critters that might be randomly encountered on the given planes. The best bet is simply to read through the ecology material for given planar monsters and make your own lists (the most comprehensive material beings the various Planes of Law/Chaos/Conflict box sets combined with the PSMC I, II, and III). Not all monsters in 3e necessarily have a listing of what plane they necessarily are native to, if they're extraplanar, in which case the source material proves a better bet. *(outside of some comprehensive fan made ones, of which think Rip made one at some point. I know he made one for various Abyssal layers.) |

This one to. Guess I'll need to make up one for all the more recent creatures. |
| Shemeska the Marauder04-23-06, 01:21 AM | And juusssst a tad out of date. Between those sources I gave, they cover all of the major races of the various planes, and others are pretty easy to add in. For Gehenna for instance, the list here off the top of my head covers probably 95% of the population of the plane in terms of natives. The lists need not be very involved for true natives of a plane. Gehenna: Yugoloths Larvae/Petitioners of Gehenna Barghests Slasreth Vaporighu Pyroclastic dragons Styx dragons Phiuhls |
| Myst_the_Moonscout04-23-06, 02:10 AM | Don't know about a list, but then, I haven't looked. Might depend on the critter but it should tell you in the "environment" section of the stat block. The ones I just looked up all had the plane listed under their environment "the bleak eternity of Gehenna" or something like that. |
| The Vorpal Tribble04-23-06, 11:17 AM | Between those sources I gave, they cover all of the major races of the various planes Not neccessarily. The Planar Handbook list, though quite extensive, doesn't have Complete Psionic, Frostburn, Heroes of Horror, Lords of Madness, Magic of Incarnum, Monster Manual III, Expanded Psionics Handbook, Sandstorm, Stormwrack, Tomb of Magic, etc, etc. For Gehenna for instance, the list here off the top of my head covers probably 95% of the population of the plane in terms of natives. | savant_warlord1304-23-06, 12:03 PM | Yeah! I want to see a list of Limbons! |
| Shemeska the Marauder04-23-06, 08:58 PM | Those plus the Shadurakul, Terlen I'd be surprised if they combined to even 1% of the total population of the plane. They're minor races on the fringes of the power structure of the plane's native races. Of course some planes are going to have a larger variety than others, with the Abyss for instance having a hideously large number of critters. But the Gehennan list there was rather complete so far as listing those races important in raw numbers and/or influence. Xac-Yel (Energon) that I can find so far. And energons on the Outer Planes, really anywhere outside the energy planes, just don't make sense. :twocents: |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht04-23-06, 09:51 PM | This one to. Guess I'll need to make up one for all the more recent creatures. Most of which were in 2e. Almost all the ones that weren't don't make any sense to begin with. |

| The Vorpal Tribble04-27-06, 12:29 PM | Whoops, another dozen or so in Complete Arcane that I didn't know about. Added those in. |
| Myst_the_Moonscout04-27-06, 02:58 PM | Since a listing of creatures by plane doesn't appear to be immediately forthcoming why don't we just make one? It sould be pretty easy if some people volunteer to each go through a particular source book or two. I'd be up for that. |

Basically you can just add what I wrote above to it and it should be more or less updated. |
